著者処女作で、探偵マイク・ハマーシリーズ第一作でもある。

近年ではハードボイルドものでも拳銃は最後の最後、いわば奥の手のアイテムとなった感があるが、本作は７０年代の作品ということもあるせいか、主人公は４５口径の拳銃を常に持ち歩き、必要とあらば平気で前歯が折れる程相手を殴りつけるタフガイ。

アメリカンなハードボイルドを味わうにはオススメ。多少訳語が古臭いがそれもまた味。大きい書店なら著作を見つけることもできるだろうが、ズラリと並ぶクリスティの著作にタメ息をつくことの方が多い。ちなみに私はハマーの秘書ヴェルダがお気に入り。

私立探偵マイク・ハマーのデビュー作。
バイオレンスとエロティシズムの印象の強いスピレイン、確かに本書でも、人を殴り、銃を撃ち、美女とイイ関係になる。が、発表当時（１９４７年）には衝撃作だったのかもしれないが、いま読んでみるとそれほどでもない。はるかに暴力的でドギツイ小説が次々に出ているから。

バイオレンスやエロティシズムよりも、犯人はミエミエだがミステリとしてよくできている。「スピレインは暴力的」というイメージが先走りしすぎているんじゃないかな。そんなモノを抜きにして、再評価されてもいい作家だと思います。

レイモンド・チャンドラーやダシール・ハメット、ロス・マクドナルドと読み継いでいく
うちに気になっていた作家が、ミッキー・スピレイン。
このような事からハードボイルド作品の比較対象として本作は興味深い。
「軽いハードボイルド」小説であることは否めませんが、当時アメリカの読者の傾向や
指向を反映していたのでしょう。
