財産目当てに資産家の娘に近づく男の野望。ストーリーは確かに今となっては古臭い。しかしこの作品が世に出た当時でもさほど斬新なものではなかったはずです。この作品よりも２０年以上も前に「チャンスは平等の国＝アメリカ」がすでに幻想となったことを示したドライサーの『アメリカの悲劇』が資産家令嬢との結婚話が持ち上がったため邪魔になった恋人を殺害する男の物語だったからです。

ではどこが傑作たるゆえんか、といえばやはりそのエンターテインメント性にあふれた構成でしょう。犯人を主人公にして犯罪を描くいわゆる倒叙もの（別名刑事コロンボ方式）でありながら、章ごとに視点を変えることによって誰が犯人（主人公？）であるか、かなり読み進んでからでないと読者にもわからないようになっています。小説ならではの技法と言えるでしょう。
ちなみに映画化もされていますが、映像にしてしまうとこの構成の妙を生かせないため、陳腐なサスペンスものになってしまいました。

とにかく一読してみることをお勧めします。社会を鋭くえぐった、ということではなく、エンターテインメントとして（もちろんほめ言葉です）すばらしい作品です。

　貧しい美貌の青年が大富豪の三人姉妹を財産目当てに次々に手玉にとって殺し、最後は破滅するというストーリー。

　こうまとめてしまうといかにものありきたりなストーリーですが、人物描写も見事で一気に読ませます。姉妹間の葛藤や父娘間の葛藤、青年が獲物を狙う肉食動物のように周到に娘たちを死に至らしめる様子など、これが著者23歳のしかも処女作とはとても思えない。恐るべしアイラ・レビン。

背表紙のあらすじに、「戦慄すべき完全犯罪を行おうとするアプレゲールの青年の冷酷非情な行動と野心」と書いてありましたが、まさにその通り。読みながら、何度も心の中で「げす野郎！」と叫んだことか。野心ゆえに、妊娠した恋人が邪魔になり完全犯罪を行う青年の心境が恐ろしい程に伝わってきました。切迫感に押しつぶされそうになりながら一気に読みました。冷や汗ものです。まだ読んでない人に是非味わって欲しい一冊です。
