自殺願望がある調査員を主人公にしている。フランシス得意の男の誇りをテーマにしたスリラーだが､いつも主人公に何らかの弱点を用意している。それがこの主人公の自殺願望というところなんだろう。この頃のフランシスはハズレがない。とにかくこれしか言い様がない。冒険小説の傑作だ！

競馬シリーズの1967年の第６作。
主人公は長らく自殺願望を抱いている人間。強い意志と不屈の精神を常とするフランシスの主人公が自殺願望？　何だかそぐわない気がして、読む前から不安を感じた。

果たして不安は的中した。自殺を望む人間の心情なんか全く描けていない。強い意志と不屈の精神を持つ典型的なフランシスの主人公が、単に設定上の都合で"自殺願望"のレッテルを貼っているだけという感じで、チグハグな事この上ない。主人公が冷静沈着な、突き放した物の見方をする人間である事が、チグハグさを余計際立たせている。

そんなわけで、主人公が自殺を思いとどまるラストも、取って付けたような感じしか受けず、そんな事で思いとどまるくらいなら、初めから自殺なんか考えるなよ、と思ってしまった。

悲運に打ちのめされた人間の哀しさなら、「混戦」の方がはるかに良く描けている。それでも「混戦」の主人公は淡々と生きており、自殺願望など抱いていない。フランシスの主人公としては、その方がずっと自然だと思う。

フランシスの作品は当たり外れが少なく、しかも初期の作品は傑作ぞろいのはずなのに、本書は私にとっては大いにハズレだった。ミステリー仕立ての本筋は決して悪くないのに、残念である。

D.フランシスの「競馬シリーズ」第七作。こうしたシリーズで作者・読者共に忌避するのはマンネリである。本作はそのため以下の趣向を凝らしてある。まず、主人公のジーンを競馬界の人間ではなく諜報部員とした。次に、種馬の盗難が本作のメイン・テーマだが、馬の持ち主をアメリカ人の金持ちテラーとし、盗難先もアメリカとして物語の舞台を広げた。ただし、予めジーンを鬱気味のストイックな性格に設定しているので、ジーンの言動はシリーズの他の主人公と大差はない。盗難馬には多額の保険金が掛けられており、当初休暇中のジーンは上司の命令でしぶしぶ本件に係わる。実は三週間の休暇も本捜査もジーンの気晴らしを願う上司の配慮だった。

ところが冒頭、テームズ河での敵の襲撃で溺死寸前のテラーをジーンが救った事で、ジーンの心に火が付く。ジーンは捜査のためアメリカに渡る。当然、調査の他、アメリカの保険会社との確執と融和、種馬(血統)の価値に無知な厭世家のテラー夫人(=アメリカ人)等が皮肉タップリに描かれる。ジーンは競馬界の人間ではないが、馬には詳しいのだ。そして中盤、形ばかりのピンチの末、目的の馬の奪回に成功して拍子抜けのようだが、ジーンはそこで止めず、過去に盗まれた種馬の奪回及び組織の撲滅を図る。シリーズの主人公に共通な不屈の闘志の表れでもあるが、生きる目的が欲しいのだ。その割には机上のデータ検索で目的の牧場が見つかってしまうのはお手軽の感がある。商売柄とは言え、盗聴器を多用するのも感心出来ない。主人公の肉体的耐性が本シリーズの見所であるのだから。

マンネリを避けるために舞台設定を変えたが、結局、アメリカナイズされた軽いハードボイルド小説になってしまった。特に結末部分の展開は拙劣で、後味の悪いものになってしまった。代表作の一つと呼ばれている割には物足りない一作。
