5.0 out of 5 stars マーロウがチャンドラーの心情を語った最高傑作, 2003/9/17
この作品は訳者の清水俊二氏を含め、読者諸兄には多くの謎の部分を残した遺作だと言われているが、自分自身にはとても共感のできる部分が多かった。

中でも最大の謎の一つであるタイトルの「プレイバック」の意味は、最後の章をもう一度読み直してもらうと、実生活で年上の最愛の妻をなくしたチャンドラー自身の心情をマーロウが語っているのだということに気づくのではないだろうか。またマーロウに死後の世界を語るクラレンドン老人にしても、実は彼の言葉を通して晩年を迎えたチャンドラー自身が、己の死生観を吐露しているのではないだろうか？

誰が何と言おうともやはり本作は、「長いお別れ」などに続くチャンドラーの最高傑作として挙げたい。

この本はいつものストーリーの流れ出ないことに、気づくはずでしょう。いつもと「何かおかしい」と感じるはず。途中、突然（と感じるでしょう）老人が話し掛けてくるシーン、読み終えて感じたのは、自分の育て上げたマーロウにある老人に扮したチャンドラーが語りかけているのではないか。つまり、読んでいる間マーロウになりきっている人達にたいし、自分の気持ち・思いを伝えているのではないか。老人の「言葉」に敬意をはらって聞き入っているマーロウ。マーロウに読書中なりきってる我々もチャンドラー、彼の言葉に敬意をはらいたいものであります。

前作の『長いお別れ』から４年以上の歳月を経て発表された作品ですが、あまり
にも作風が変わっていて面食らいます。しかし、セリフは面白いと思います。第
１章で出てくる、「クリスチアン・ディオールですわ・・・他のものは絶対に身
に付けないんです」というミス・ヴァーミリアのセリフは、多分彼女の香水のこ

とを指しているのでしょう。マリリン・モンローが記者に「寝るときに身に付け
るものは？」と質問され、「シャネルの５番よ」と答えたのは何年のことだった
でしょうか。読んでいてニヤリとさられる部分です。

また、第２３章の例の有名なセリフ、

If I wasn't hard,I wouldn't be alive.If I couldn't ever be gentle,
I wouldn't deserve to be alive.

もカッコイイと思います。
