　翻訳本（ハヤカワ文庫）を読んだのは随分前のことです。その際にも、一見冷笑的でありながらその実リリカルな文体と内容に感銘を受けたことを覚えています。
　原書を購入したのは、仕事で英文を読む必要に迫られ、勘を取り戻すためにチャンドラーに挑戦してみようと思ったからです。

　しかし読み進むうちに当初の目的など忘れ、一気に読みきってしまいました。私のようにそれほど英語が得意でない者でも、翻訳を読んで感動した人なら必ず読破できると思います。作品をもう一度見直すためにも、チャンドラーファンは「読むべし」です。

「ｷﾞﾑﾚｯﾄには早すぎる」で有名な本書。名台詞があるだけでなく、作品の完成度も優れており、ﾐｽﾃﾘｰの範疇におさまらない、一流の文学作品に仕上がっています。先ほどの台詞は物語の最後の鍵となっているので、未読の皆様はｷﾞﾑﾚｯﾄを飲むときに隣の女の子にそっとささやくだけでなく、出自を確認しておくのは礼儀だと思います。
駄目なﾃﾘｰ･ﾚﾉｯｸｽになぜﾏｰﾛｳはそんなに手をかけるのかよくわからない面が多々ありますが、本書から男の生き様について教わることは多いはずです。男は我慢しなければならない局面がいっぱいあります。自分に好都合のことでも、ﾏｰﾛｳは自分の信念に正直なのです。つまり自分の信念が No といったら絶対にそちらを選択しません。本当損な生き方をしているのですが、ﾏｰﾛｳは自分を変えません。その生き様に私たちは震えるのです。
今回で３回目の再読。いつも私たちに新しい感動を与えてくれる本書はいつまでも手放せません。だんだん本書のﾏｰﾛｳの年齢に近づいていく私ですが、ﾏｰﾛｳの生き様に近づけるのはまだまだのような気がします。いくつになっても本書から教えられることばかりなのでしょう。こんな場合ﾏｰﾛｳはどうするのか。こんなことを考えながら、数年後また手にとることでしょう。それにしてもﾛｰｽﾞのﾗｲﾑｼﾞｭｰｽで作ったｷﾞﾑﾚｯﾄを飲んでみたい。

　50年前の小説で主人公の名前は英語の辞書にも出てくる有名な推理小説です。
　ふとしたきっかけで知り合った私立探偵マルローとレノックスは、親密ではないが、なんとなく友情を深めていきます。マルローはレノックスが、いつか大きなトラブルに巻き込まれるのではないかと気にかかるのですが、レノックスは妻殺しの容疑をかけられ、マルローは逃亡を手助けします。
　ストーリーは次々と意外な展開をしていき、最後の6ページで予想外の真実が明らかにされます。
　英語は若干読みづらいように思いましたが、本格的な推理小説で、読んで損はしないと思います。
