　ムードでは私的にカーの作品中ＮО.1だと思います。数年前のパリ郊外で起きた殺人事件。だれもいないはずの古塔の頂上で男の刺殺死体が発見される。警察は自殺と断定したが、世間は吸血鬼が空高く舞い降りてきて、男を切り裂いたのだと噂した。
　そして今、件の事件を調査していた歴史学者の妹が恐怖のあまりに瀕死状態に陥った。何かが”囁く”呟きながら。しかもそこには数年前の事件、吸血鬼と呼ばれ、被害者の嫁となるはずだった女性がいた！

　簡単に言うとこういう話です。巨匠得意の不可能犯罪もあり、かつてない殺害方法を生み出していますが、仰天するようなトリックがあるかというと、悪くもありませんが解決にそういった目立つ点はありません。

　しかし、とにかく雰囲気はかつてないほどの高みに達しており、その点、珍しくカーのストーリーテラーとしての腕前を堪能できます。

カーはタイトルの語感が気に入ると何度も使い回しをしたがる傾向があります
「囁く影」「引き潮の魔女」「ヴァンパイアの塔」といったところは
何度も作品のタイトルに使われています

で、これは「囁く影」の長篇
長らく重刷未定になっていてファンを嘆かせていましたが
現在は手に入れやすくなっています

吸血鬼伝説が蔓延る中、尖塔の上で殺人が

現場には犯人の人影はなく
被害者が昇った後、おりてきた者もいない
どうやったんでしょうね？

一応不可能犯罪でありますが、
実は一部の事件に関してはある程度読みなれた人だと
容易にトリックはわかってしまうかと。
完全にはわからないにしても概要は先読みできると思います。


でもそれでもトリックは巧妙です。
そうされたら誰が見たって
殺しが誰かはわからなくなってしまいますからね。


ただ残念なことに犯人発覚部分が
この作家の某作品と類似しています。
つかまり方もろとも。
まぁその作品も不可能犯罪ものなので
仕方ないかと思います。
