本作はカーの密室物の代表作。ミステリ作家・編集者として著名なE.D.ホックが投票で選んだ密室ミステリの人気投票でダントツの１位に入った。その名に恥じない名作である。

ペンシルヴァニアの監獄の三つの墓の話から始まる濃厚なオカルティズム。その墓には３人兄弟が埋葬されていた。その墓から"蘇った"長男が自宅で密室状態で殺される不可能犯罪性。長男は「弟が撃つとは思わなかった...」と虫の息で言う。しかし、同じく"蘇った"次男も、袋小路で雪の上で足跡を残さない透明人間のように姿の見えない相手に銃殺されてしまうのだ。撃った人物は「２発目はおまえにだ」と叫ぶ。犯人は残された３男なのか ?

これだけ、"死者の蘇り"を中心とするオカルティズムと不可能犯罪性とを前面に出しながら、合理的解決に導く作者の手腕は見事と言うしかない。上述のセリフや登場人物達の様々な言動がパズルをピタリと嵌めるように収斂する様は感嘆の他はない。

本作品のもう一つの読みどころはフェル博士(=カー)が披露する有名な"密室談義"である。カーの密室論が聞けるのも面白いし、特にルルー、ヴァン・ダイン、クィーンの作品に対する実名を挙げての批評が興味深い。また、フェル博士の口を借りて「我々は推理小説の中にいる人物であり、そうでないふりをして読者たちをバカにするわけにはいかない」と言わせているのは、カーのミステリ観を知る上で大変貴重だ。

オカルティズムと不可能犯罪性とそれに対する合理的解決。それに加えて"密室談義"。ミステリ・ファン必読の大傑作である。

カーは全て面白いが、ベストはやはりこれだろう。

フェル博士の密室講義があるのはこれだから。

まあ、クイーンにも言えるが、

日本語で読むと面白さが１００％伝わらないのはしゃない。

時計のトリック（時間の錯誤）が納得出来ないのは、

カーが悪いんではなく、翻訳が悪いと思いなせぇ！（ｗ

実は四つの棺になっていく過程が日本語でも十分ゾクゾク出来ます。

見事な小説を作り上げています

惜しむらくは、日本語にするとよく分からないんだよね
