本書は推理小説史上、最高の推理作品であり、究極のパズル小説だ。

作者は「エジプト十字架の秘密」の中で、「わたしは○○の動機を知っていなかったし、いまこの瞬間でさえも知っていないということです。しかし、実際問題として、どれだけの違いがありますか」と、犯人が明らかになった後でさえ、探偵エラリー・クイーンに語らせている。それは、作者が推理小説をパズル小説として位置づけ、動機の解明など二の次としている姿勢を表している。そして、その姿勢を実践したのが本書なのだ。

本書で犯人はヨーク・ハッターのシナリオどおりに犯行を行なうが（最後でシナリオに背くが）、犯人自身には殺人に関しての何らかの意志や動機というものを感じることはできない。
しかし実際問題として、動機は犯人の心の中にあるもので、犯人自らが語らない限りそれを本当に探り当てるのは不可能だ。だからレーンは動機については多くを語らず、とにかく犯人の条件として適合するデータを揃え、そのデータから唯一無二の犯人を探り当てるのだ。

だからこそ、本書は本格推理小説の王道であるパズル小説Ｎｏ．１として常に称えられ続けてきたのだし、パズル小説である本格推理小説が支持され続ける限り、今後もその賞賛は続くことだろう。

　レーン四部作はどれも傑作ぞろいですが、一番面白い作品はどれかと聞かれたら迷わずこの作品をあげます。というのも、作品の出来はもちろんですが、どうも雰囲気に欠けるクイーンのアメリカ式ミステリにしてはとても設定が英国風、登場人物は癖のある人物ばかりで、名探偵ドルリイ・レーンの魅力が惜しみなく出ている、つまりこの作品は最初から最後までとても劇的なのです。

　しかし、本格ミステリとしてこれが一番かというと、そうとは断言できません。国名シリーズの傑作に比べれば推理の完成度は劣り、"推理小説”として読むのなら他にも良い作品がいくつもあると思います。
　
それでも、前述した通りほとんど完璧な推理小説を書くクイーンの初期の作品中、一番面白く読めるのは恐らく本書です。よく、「Ｙ」を読む前に「Ｘ」を読むべきだ、と言われますが、私的にはどちらでも良い気もします。確かに「Ｘ」は素晴らしいミステリですが、これは「Ｙ」だけを読んで「Ｘ」を読まないのはいけない、と言う意味だと思うので、推理小説を読んだことがない方は面白いこちらの方を先に読んだほうが良いかもしれません。極端な話、子どもなどはそのほうが良いかと。

　犯人については、簡単にわかる方とそうでない方がいるよう。私は謎解きのちょっと前に考えてやっとわかりましたが、それでも意外で十分満足できるでしょう。

初めて翻訳で読んだのが２０年くらい前。外国ミステリーにハマりはじめていた小学生の私には非常に衝撃のある作品でした。数限りなくミステリー作品を読んできましたが、内容を鮮明に覚えているという点ではこの作品がＮ０１。
高校生の頃クラスメイトが「あの作品は原文で読まないと面白さがわからない」と言っていた言葉を忘れずに十数年。

この度ようやく原書で読んでみました。

やはり傑作。クインファン、ミステリファンの方にはぜひ原書で読んでもらいたい、と思うのであります。
