　この本はともかくおもしろい。頭がいい人もそれなりの悩みをもち、生き方に苦労するのだ。数学者の著者が、数学に才能ある人がそれ以外のことに時間を使うのは能力の無駄遣いだと考えているのもおもしろい。でも、ところどころにでる数学の問題、数式を気にする人、「数理を愉し」もうという人びとには猛烈な欲求不満に陥るだろう。

　しかし、それで少し勉強しようとする人がでれば著者は満足なのかもしれない。インターネットではとても親切な解説（たとえばフェルマの小定理など）がある。

前書きではなく、序論ではベルの意気込みがうかがえてとても期待した。
ただ訳があんまりです。まるで論旨が通らない訳で、
「数学の神童は往々世間で言われるように、必ずしも実をむすぶにいたらないとはかぎらない。その反対を説く執拗な迷信にもかかわらず、数学の早熟性は輝かしい成熟への最初のひらめきななることが多いのである。」
この訳をする訳者はあんまりです。

こんな文章が延々なのは、読む気持ちすら失せます。

確かにこの本は面白いです。
数学の時間に名前をチラッと聞いたり、定理の名前でしか知らないような数学者の人生について細かく書いてあり、まさに「事実は小説より奇なり」といった感じで読者に語りかけてきます。

ただ、内容は面白いのですが、文体が少々その面白さを半減させているような感じもします。

翻訳ものということである程度は覚悟していたのですが、どう見ても無理やり直訳して破綻しているような部分が少なからず見受けられ、文章を理解するのにかなりの時間がかかることもよくありました。

この本のウリはなんと言っても数学者の「人生」を紹介する点にあるわけですから、原作の表現を少々壊すことになっても文体にこだわって欲しかったと思います。
