　この記録は、とてもドラマティックなシーンから始まります。気が付けば吹雪の夜、ひとりで見知らぬ町をあてどなくさまよっているというのは、どれほど不可解で理不尽なことでしょう。深酒が過ぎて記憶が飛ぶということはままあるとはいえ、そこまでの記憶のミッシング・リンクというのは、通常は存在しません。このシビルのように、さっきまで三年生だったのに、四年生をすっ飛ばして五年生になっているなどということは有り得ないのです。そのシビルが、多重人格者としては初めて精神分析を受けたのですが、その過程が記されたこの記録は、多重人格という稀有なケースの、驚くべき背景と経過をよく記した膨大なよき資料であると言えるでしょう。

　他の人格を拒否していたシビルが、やがてそれらを受け入れ、統合へ歩を進める様子は感動的でさえあります。治療を終えたシビルが、自らの苦難を振り返り、決してそれを否定していないことに私は深く心を動かされます。人の心の不思議さとしやなかなしたたかさに思いを馳せた一冊です。

多重人格という病気はどのようなものなのか。
本当の自分がわからない、たった今の記憶が無いという、
その苦しみと恐怖がリアルに描かれ、その源泉を探ることで
人格を統合していく過程を、治療にあたった医師との
インタビューにより描いている。

６００ページというボリュームだが、一気に読みきって
しまう程に引き込まれてしまう。

20年前に読んで衝撃を受けて以来、時折読み返す本。多重人格については近年マスコミでもクローズアップされているが、『ビリー･ミリガン』のはるか以前に、このような症例が報告されていることにアメリカ社会の病巣の深さを思う。そしてまた日本も‥。本書は、多重人格というセンセーショナルに見える病気への単なる興味を超えて、人間の持つ底知れぬ可能性、極限の状況にあってなお生き延びようとするエネルギーの奥深さを示してくれる。
