4.0 out of 5 stars 中世ドイツを体感できる歴史サスペンス, 2009/3/27
中世ドイツの都市、ケルンの大聖堂の建築現場で、有名建築家の死を目撃してしまった「こそ泥のヤコプ」が、殺し屋に命を狙われる……というのが上巻のあらすじです。
殺し屋のバックには貴族たちがいて、ケルンの町を揺るがす陰謀を企んでいます。貴族たちの企みは何なのか、なぜ建築家は死ななければならなかったのか、多くの謎を残したまま、上巻は終わります。

建築家の死を巡るスリリングな物語も面白いのですが、中世ドイツの情景を描いた部分も読みどころのひとつです。商業で発展した都市ケルンの活気ある市場の様子や、貴族や商人たちの生活、教会や修道士の活動などが生き生きと、また非常に詳しく描き出されています。中世ヨーロッパの世界を体感できる、上質の歴史サスペンスです。

「深海のyrr」が面白かったので、同じ著者だったので買ってみました。
今回は、13世紀のドイツのケルンという都市を舞台にしたサスペンス。
ワクワクしながら読み進めました･･･････が、有名な世界史レベルの知識しかない私にはドイツの歴史は難しかったです。名前も主人公のヤコプとかならまだしも、他の登場人物では聞きなれない名前（例えばコンラート・フォン・ホッホシュターデン等･･･長いっ!）が勢ぞろいで、上巻も終わりにくるまで慣れず、何度も「登場人物のページ」を見返し、地名も同様何度もケルン市地図のページを見返しと苦戦してしまいました。
　この本は主人公ヤコプサイドを追う章と相対する側の章が順番に出ているような感じです。
ドイツの歴史に疎い私はヤコプサイドでの文章では人物の個性も分かりやすいし、かなり楽しくハラハラドキドキさせてもらいましたが、主に敵側の方にドイツの歴史背景等が描写されてくるし、長い名前の人たちばかり出てくるので、そこで読むペースもスローダウン。。。
　正直言って前作の方がページ数が多いのに読み進めやすかったです。
もうちょっとドイツ史を少しでもかじったら、もう一度読み返してみようと思います。
そしたら、また面白さが増すような気がします。
　ちなみに犯人は、読んで早々に分かるので、あとは犯人からどう逃げるのか?!!?!、どう向き合うのか?!?!というところが楽しく読めました。
････私は「深海のyrr」のが好きなので、好みの問題になりますが、☆は3つです。

ドイツの歴史サスペンス小説。前作『深海のyrr』が面白かったので、これも読んでみたが、こちらは、前作と打って変わって13世紀のドイツのケルンを舞台にした歴史もの。十字軍やキリスト教の話、ケルンという町の歴史がふんだんに散りばめられていて、なかなか面白い。『薔薇の名前』とかが好きな人ならピッタリ（自分も好きだけど...）
ただ、やはりヨーロッパ中世、キリスト教の歴史の知識が前提として書かれているようなところもあって、その辺の知識に疎い自分にはちょっと読むのが大変だ。でも、そのヨーロッパ中世の重々しい暗い雰囲気がこの作品の良さでもある。

トイフェルって何かと思ったらドイツ語で悪魔という意味。高校、大学とドイツ語を勉強してきたのが全く役に立っていないな。しかし、ドイツ語そのままとは題名につけるとは...

下巻も楽しみ。
