4.0 out of 5 stars 絶版だったことが悔やまれる一冊, 2005/3/27
海洋冒険小説の体裁を取っていますが、これは男の友情と生死を共にする仲間を描いた、一種の青春劇(但し、遅咲きの)。
克明な描写が紡ぎ出す帆船の勇姿、小気味良い台詞の応酬、血生臭さが迫る戦闘など、ホーンブロワーでは感じられなかった「潮臭い追い風」が、この本には確かにあります。
何だか、苦労の割には報われていないし、全編やたらと専門用語の連発で、一歩間違えば野暮ったい本なのだけど、読了後の余韻が実に涼やかです。
ただ、やはり海洋冒険物に慣れていない人にはかなりキツい。
入門編としては硬派過ぎるかもしれません。よって星一個下げ。

実は映画を先に見ました（しかも飛行機の中で）。
映画は迫力の戦闘シーンが二度あって、出演者も魅力的で面白いものでした。
ただ「ちょっと中だるみするなあ」というところもあって、やはり原作に当るか！と読み出したのですが、やっぱり同じ印象でした。

多分あとがきにも書かれている本シリーズの一つでもある「詳細な帆船知識やオーブリーを取り巻く人たちとのやり取り」などが”詳細”過ぎて”冒険小説”を読もうという私に合わなかったのだと思います。

なのでかなり飛ばして読みました。アウトラインはながーーい準備の後乗り組んだオーブリーが活躍する話でそのあたりは面白いのですが、前後を取り巻くエピソードがだるいなあ、と。
もしかしたら翻訳本のせいかも知れません。原典に当るとどうなるか。試してみます。

ただ「マスターアンドコマンダー」が「指揮官と兵士」のような意味ではなく「航海長兼海尉艦長（尉官艦長）」ということが一番の収穫かも。

万人にはお勧めしないが、世界へ覇権を広げて最盛期を迎えようとしているイギリスのエネルギーを感じる物語。
１８世紀後半~１９世紀初頭の英国海軍や軍艦内の様子が、書きすぎかと思えるほど詳細に記述されている。

戦艦同士の戦闘場面など、専門用語のオンパレードとなってしまい、いささか食傷気味の面も否めないが、頑張って読み進めばさわやかなラストが待っている。
帆船に興味がなければ辛そうなので、星ひとつ減じました。
