まず驚くべきは、マイクル・クライトンの内界の旅への真摯で誠実な描写の数々。あの有名人がここまであからさまにしていいのだろうか、というくらいかなりプライベートなところまで突っ込んで書いてます。だからでしょうか、共感を得る箇所もかなり多くて、読後はすっかり著者に親しみを抱いてしまいました。「直接的経験」著者はこの言葉を本作の中で何度も繰り返し、末尾はリルケの詩「きみが何者であれ、ある夜、よく知った我が家から一歩踏み出したまえ」で締めくくっています。本作は精神世界や宗教に心惹かれるのだけれど、どうも今一歩のめり込めない人にとっては特にオススメです。また何かを探しに旅に出る人にも。上巻より下巻の方が興味を引く話が多いでしょうが、どちらも全編単独のショートですので、堅苦しい長編が苦手な人も飽きずに読めます。しんみり、涙もありです。女性にも読んで欲しいですね。

「あれだけ稼いでおいて何が不満なの？」といった疑問は誰もが抱くと思いますが、そのクライトンが自分を探すために振り返る医学生時代の出来事。さらには科学者の視点を持つ著者が経験していく超常現象の数々。俄かには信じがたい体験も数々ありますが、著者自身そういった疑いを抱きつつも強く惹かれていく様子がとても興味深く思い、一気に読んでしまう。クライトンファンはもちろん、ならずとも十分楽しめます！

この本では、名門大学で医学を専攻した作者が、冷静な観察眼と科学的な批判精神を持つことが作品内の随所から読み取れる。その作者が、下巻では、その冷静な目で自らの経験した神秘体験を客観的に描いているのがとても説得力があった。作者の見る目は、上巻に描かれている、非日常的ではあるが「普通」の体験と下巻に描かれている「神秘的」体験との間で、何も変わっていない。強い好奇心と突き放した分析力とで切り出した現実を積み上げて出来上がった文章はとてもエキサイティングで、一気に読み終えてしまった。
