謎解きの要素は前作ジュラシックパークにもあったが、今回の謎解きはかなりスケールが大きく刺激的だ。
サスペンスフルな作品全体を通して「恐竜絶滅の謎」について奇抜な視点から迫っていくのである。
新しい学説とでもいっていいような根幹が作品に横たわっており、それに枝葉としてエンターテインメントの要素が加えられている構造なわけだ。

ラストは胸を打つソーンの台詞で締められていて、これもスケールの大きな作品のエンディングとして非常に感慨深い。

堅苦しいことは抜きにしても、凶暴無比のヴェロキラプトル、驚異の体色変化能力で迫るカルノタウルス、意外な母性愛を見せるＴ-ＲＥＸと、ド派手な恐竜の描写も非常にリアル。

登場人物マルカム博士の恐竜絶滅の新学説の答えについては作品のなかで確かめてみてください。

前作が意味深な終わり方をしていたので、ついつい買ってしまいました。
出だしこそ、数学者Malcomをして生物の絶滅についての新しい視点が提供され、作者は前作では語り尽くせなかったのだなと感心しながら読み進んだのですが、尻すぼみでした。

作者ならではの現代文明・科学への警鐘を期待したのですが、前作通りのパニック恐竜物語に止まっており、これでは何の為の続編だか分かりません。パニックを起こすだけなら映画の特撮の方が楽しめるでしょうし。また何故かまたしても登場する子供達もはっきり言って邪魔です。こういう余計な設定をするから「お子ちゃま向け冒険恐竜小説」になってしまうのです。

そこまでしてもう一稼ぎしたかったのか、と邪推すらしてしまいます。

本書は前作ジュラシックパークの続編で、恐竜は全滅させられた筈だったが、実はある島で生きていて、その恐竜を調査するために島に乗り込んだというストーリーです。前半は動きがなく退屈しますが、さすがに島に乗り込んでからの、息つく間も与えないストーリー展開は圧巻です。ただ、今度の作品は、あまりにも恐竜との死闘の部分を盛り上げようとする作者の作為があからさまで、その点がかなり不愉快でした。
前作もそうでしたが、どうしてラプトルはあんなにも人間を襲うことに執着するのか、Ｔレックスは獲物でも敵でもない自動車を、なぜ崖から突き落とそうと懸命に努力するのかがどうしても理解できません。また、前作で恐竜があれほど危険だということが分かっていながら、なぜ毒針ライフル銃数丁だけの軽装備で島に入ったのか、銃が大好きなアメリカ人の行動パターンからは想像もつきません。
ただ一つ確かなのは、そういう設定にしないと恐竜と人間との手に汗握る死闘は起こりえず、小説にはならなかったということです。
そして最後の結末･･･思いもよらない結末に驚いたのは事実ですが、ちょっと都合が良すぎるのではないかと思ったのは私一人ではなかったと思います。作者の細かな配慮が不足した欠点だらけの小説だと思いますが、息詰るサスペンスはそういった欠点も吹き飛ばしてしまうでしょう。むしろ時間をかけて英語で読むよりも日本語で一気に読んでしまった方が楽しめると思います。
