スーパーマン的な人物が活躍するかつてのスパイ小説に代わって登場した、リアルな現代のスパイ小説のさきがけとなったのが本作なのだそうです。とにかく、“非情”という言葉がよく似合う雰囲気を持っています。これを読んでスパイに憧れる人なんていないでしょう。過酷な現代社会の象徴がスパイという位置づけなのかも知れません。

作者は本作の主人公リーマスと同様ドイツ語ができ、外交官として一時期はスパイに近い仕事をしていたそうです。だとしたら、ここに描かれているようなスパイ組織の謀略も、決して絵空事ではないということなのでしょうか。だとしたら恐ろしいことです。ラスト・シーンを読み終わった時、しばらく呆然としてしまうこと請け合いです。

本書は、英国におけるミステリーの頂点、「CWA（英国推理作家協会）賞」の’６３年度、ゴールド・ダガー賞（最優秀長編賞）受賞作であると共に、アメリカにおけるミステリーの最高峰、「MWA（アメリカ探偵作家クラブ）賞」・通称エドガー賞の’６５年度、ベスト・ノヴェル（最優秀長編賞）受賞作でもある。

英米のミステリー大賞を両方受賞するという快挙をなした、“スパイ小説の金字塔”と呼ばれる、もはやクラシックの風格さえ漂う作品である。

従来のスパイ小説が００７のように、超人的な能力の持ち主である主人公が、手に汗にぎる危機一髪的な事件で活躍する≪神話≫であったのに対し、本書では、われわれ同様血のかよった人間である諜報部員の真実の姿を、はじめてシリアスに活写してみせたところが、当時高い評価を得た所以だろう。

物語やシチュエーションの古さは否めないが、最近のスパイ小説にくらべればシンプルにも思える筋立てで、最後までストレートに読ませる。どうも最近の小説はどんでん返しが多くて・・・という読者には向いているだろう。恋愛もほどよく落ち着いてストーリーに織り込まれている。主人公リーマスの心からの叫びをぜひ聞いてもらいたい。

余談になるが、私は「ベルリンの壁」崩壊直後の２月に東ベルリンと東ドイツを訪れたことがある。当時の曇った冬空と“寒い国”を思い出しながら本書を味読した。

冷戦中の話ですので、ややレトロな雰囲気が漂う作品です。
でもそこがまた味わいがあって、よろしいかと。
冒頭のつかみも良く、作品を貫く謎、そして後半からラストの1行まで、一気に読ませます。
読了後はしばらく放心状態になるでしょう。

本物を読んだ、そんな気持ちになるはずです。
