「自分にはできない」と落ち込んだりあきらめたりするのは思い込みであったり、全力をつくしてないだけかもしれない、と思わせてくれる作品です。皆で勇気と知恵を出し合えばきっとできると勇気付けられます。　オズシリーズは全14巻で、ボームの死後も数人の作家によって続編が書かれるほどの大人気の作品です。1900年に出版され大ヒットとなり、続編をとの子供たちの要求に応えて、ボームは毎年クリスマスシーズンに一冊ずつ出版し、アメリカの子ども達はクリスマスにオズの本を楽しみにしていました。　ボームは序文で“子供達を喜ばせることのみを目標とする”と書いているように、これまで子供のために書かれたお話特有の教訓や道徳性を強調するのではなく、新しいおとぎ話を作った人物です。彼のスタイルは全く新しく、世紀転換期に出された彼の序文はアメリカ児童文学の独立宣言とも言われています。それにも関わらずファンタジーは子供によくないとされ全米の図書館から姿を消した時代もありました。しかし100年たった今でも世界中で愛されアメリカではクリスマスシーズンには映画が毎年放送されるほど古典になっています。どんな苦難にあってもめげることなく前へ進んでいくドロシーはアメリカの開拓精神を象徴し、今まで少年がするものだと思われていた冒険を少女がやるといったフェミニズム的にも読め、児童文学とはいえ多角的に読むことができるので大人でも楽しんで読めます。原書も高校英語レベルで読めるので、英語を学んでいる方へもお勧めの一冊です。小さい時に読んだことがあるという方も是非もう一度読んでみてください。

　ドロシーはカンザスの草原で農夫のヘンリーおじさんとエムおばさんといっしょに暮らしている少女でした。
　ある日竜巻で家ごとふきとばされて、遠くマンチキンの国におりたちます。
　良い魔法使いからおでこにキスをもらい、魔女の銀の靴をはいて、子犬のトトといっしょに偉大な魔法使いの居るオズの国を目指します。「願いはカンザスに帰してもらうこと」
　途中で脳みその欲しいかかし、ハートのほしいブリキのきこり、勇気のほしいライオンといっしょになり、協力し合いながら道を進んでいきます。


　子どもの頃とても面白く読んだのですが、あらためて大人になってこの文庫を読んでみると、やっぱりすごく面白いです。
　悪い魔女のうえに家が落ちてしまったことにモジモジする様子や、竜巻で飛ばされた家にきちんと鍵をかける様子など、
「ドロシーのいかにも普通の女の子の動作」
が共感もって楽しめます。
　かかし　も、キコリも、ライオンも本当に人が良くて、「楽しい道連れだな」としみじみしました。
　とても楽しい童話です。
　新井苑子さんのイラストもとても素敵で、本当に楽しませてもらいました。

極シンプルな世界観に直線的なストーリー。
それが軸を生み、世の中の本質を上手く浮き彫りにしている。
例えば主人公に対して「良い」と自称する者は最後まで
善人で、外見も良い。逆に悪い者は外見も性格も悪く
書かれている。これが一人間から見た主観的な世の中なのでしょうね。
もう一つ、ドロシーの仲間になるかかし、きこり、ライオン。
この三者は、皆、自分に無い物をねだると言う目的で
ドロシーに同行する。道中、彼らは自分でも気付かない内に
そのコンプレックスを克服していく。それはまるで
欲しい物とは、それを求める事が手に入れる事の始まりである
と言う事を暗に物語っているかのよう。
そして極めつけはオズの正体。これには最初肩透かしを
食らう事間違いなしだが、ここに一番深いメッセージが
備わっていると思われるので、是非、一読して自分なりの
考えを構築する手伝いにして欲しい物です。
ただしこの作品、会話のやり取りが事務的で、そこの所は
同じファンタジーの傑作、不思議の国のアリスより劣ります。
最後に挿絵ですが、ハヤカワのこれは女性的なタッチで、
ドロシーなどフランス人形の様に描かれており、なかなか格式が有ります。
パースは狂ってますがｗちなみに展数は内側のカラーページ入れて１５です。
