新語法（ニュースピーク）、二重思考（ダブルシンク）といった造語、「自由は屈従である」等のスローガン、スパイ団、テレスクリーン等の監視装置、、、。本書の刊行された1940年代以降、西側諸国においてディスとピアとしての共産主義≒全体主義社会像を決定付けた記念碑的作品である。
本書の提示するイメージあまりに鮮烈過ぎたためか、オーウェル自身の意図とは離れ、逆に世間のディストピア観を矮小化するに至ったとさえ感じることがある。「1984年的でない社会」＝「自由な社会」という短絡に対する警鐘は「マトリックス」の登場を待たねばならなかった。自ら考えることを放棄させる術は、本書の描くように絶え間ない監視と強制によるものではなく、むしろ穏やかで高等な環境操作によるべきであろうことは２１世紀の今日では簡単に想像がつく。
とはいえ、２０世紀の下半期、西側社会のバイブルであり続けた重要小説であることには間違いない。

この作品はSFか否か？　という議論が以前某所で交わされた。まあ普通はそういう扱いはせず、幻想文学、風刺小説といった括りになるのだと思う。
だがSFとは別物かというとそうでもない。目まぐるしく改変される過去、洗脳、言語統制、永久戦争・・・このダークなセンスオブワンダーは紛れも無く一級のSF作品と呼んで支障ない。冷戦が終わった今日ではやや迫真性に欠けて見えるかも知れないが、私にとっては変わらず傑作だ。

なお、この作品には少なくとも二つの映画化作品が存在する。「1984」(John Hurt主演）は原作に比較的忠実であり、国内では買えないが、米国アマゾンでは検索でき、これも傑作と言える。「未来世紀ブラジル」は一見本作品と何の関係も無いのだが、観た人は異口同音に「これはモンティ・パイソン版『1984』だ！」と何でだか言い切った。無論私も何でだか言い切った。映画の出来は素晴らしかった。

これは恐ろしい話である。恐ろしいほどまでに絶望的な話である。政府が思想の弾圧を 行うのに、言葉を統制して人民を骨抜きにするためのあらゆる策略が詰まっている話である。 今は2000年で本書が示した世界は無いが、世界の様々な国では大なり小なり危険な統制が芽を 潜めている。平和な世界を維持するためにも必読の書であると思う。
