　重いです。だけど、大名作です。何もかも忘れて没頭したい本、それだけの価値のある本。 　第二次世界大戦の、輸送船団の話だから、まあ戦争物なんだけど、そういう安易な括り方をしたくない。いつも同じことばかり書いているみたいでやだけど、ここに出てくる男達のかっこいいこと。極限状態に近い（というよりそのもの）の中だからこそ迫ってくる、一種の純情さというか、男気というか、そういうものがいいんだ。 　だから、安易なハッピーエンドなんか、はなから求めてはいけない。マクリーンの描く濃厚な世界にどっぷり身を沈めて、最後にどこに行き着こうが、ふっと深いため息をついて、ライトを消して、枕に頭をあずけるべき本だと思う。

ただ単に、海洋冒険小説の古典的名作というので読んだのだが、これが「死闘」「激闘」という言葉以外考えられないような内容だった。しかし、タイトルを聞いて思い浮かべる印象は、凍り付きながらも極寒の海を突き進むユリシーズ号とそのクルーたちの姿。読者として一緒に航海した記憶を思い起こすと身震いしてしまう。

作者のデビュー作にして、海洋冒険小説の代表作。不屈のジョンブル魂を描いた"徹頭徹尾"男の物語である。

巡洋艦「ユリシーズ号」の乗組員は長期の戦闘で既に疲弊していた。そこへ襲い掛かる北極海の酷寒、稀に見る暴風雨とそれに伴う異常な高波、ドイツ軍が仕掛けた機雷、そしてドイツ軍との戦い。これでもかこれでもかと乗組員を襲う過酷な試練。私の「最後は助かってイギリスに戻るだろう」という甘い予測は外れ、次々と散っていく艦長と乗組員。降りかかる苦難に対し、不屈の精神で立ち向かって行く男達の姿は感動的である。艦長と乗組員、あるいは乗組員どうしの男の友情の描写も素晴らしい。

作者が「Her Majesty」と銘打った理由が素直に納得できる壮絶な男のドラマ。
