藤崎 慎吾
1962年東京都生まれ。米メリーランド大学海洋・河口部環境科学専攻修士課程修了。科学雑誌の編集者・記者、映像ソフトプロデューサーなどを経て、1999年に長篇『クリスタルサイレンス』(ハヤカワ文庫JA)で作家デビュー。同書は「ベストSF1999」国内篇第1位を獲得。以後、新時代の本格SFを担う書き手として期待を集めている(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

’０５年、「SFが読みたい！」国内編ベストSF第４位にランクインした、藤崎慎吾の、構想に５年、執筆に３年を費やしたといわれる２０００枚を超える大長編。

「２０３２年、奄美大島から与那国島にわたる南西諸島に、未曾有の地殻変動によって沈没の危機が迫る。」こんな予備知識で読み始めた。すわ『日本沈没』『死都日本』『深海のYrr』を彷彿とさせるパニック巨編か、はたまたハリウッド映画ばりの大災害エンターテインメントかと思っていると実は、テクノロジーや災害の悲惨さを超えたところを描ききった物語だった。

なるほど深海調査船＜しんかいFD＞をはじめとするハードウェアや、この危機を食い止めようと独自のISEIC（圏間基層情報雲）理論を元に６人の異なる分野の科学者たちが乗り出す。またそればかりではなく、進歩したさまざまな未来の科学技術・理論を興味深く読むことができる。

しかし物語の主人公は「色を聞いたり音を味わったりすること」ができる“共感覚”をもつ青年岳史と、与那国島で神の声を聞いたり、雨乞いの儀式で「本当に雨を降らして」しまうことのできたりする若い“ムヌチ（巫女）”柚である。彼らが‘神の遣い手’となり、島々を救おうと煩悶し、そして自らの幸せを願うのだ。最終的には科学者たちも彼らの“能力”に頼ることになるのである。そこには前述の諸作品にあるような政府や軍の関与やスケールの大きい凄惨な描写は最小限に抑えられており、伝奇小説の趣さえ漂う。

本書からは、藤崎慎吾の科学ジャーナリスト出身らしい豊富な知識と綿密な取材に加えて、日本古来の“神々の領域”に踏み込んだ豊かな想像力を読み取ることができる。

ともあれ本書は、リアリティあふれる近未来最先端の科学技術と、和製SFらしい“神がかり”とを融合させた大作である。

1，2巻を読んで、続きを読むのを忘れていた。この前読んだ『深海のyrr』と似ていて、混乱しそう。

沖縄の島々を災害が襲う。科学と呪術が混じった不思議な話だ。残りはあと1巻。忘れないようにすぐ読もう。
