作者は私の大のお気に入りで、どの作品も大好きですが、本作「夜にその名を呼べば」が最も好きな作品。
舞台は雨の小樽。内容は復讐劇。１０年以上前の作品にもかかわらず、古くささが全くありません。僅か半日程度の経過を描いてるに過ぎない核心部分は、緊張感でドキドキするほど。

ドイツ三部作や、最近の警察モノが著名な作者は、起承転結で言えば、「起承転」までの大きな転回に比べ、「結」の部分がやや弱いとこれまで思っていた。しかし、本作はいい意味で裏切られました。
初めて呼んだときの読後感が忘れられません。

廃刊になってしまっていたので、売れ残った本作品がないか、近所の書店を探し回っていました。ヒギンズ作品でさえ廃刊が相次いでいる中、図書館でしか読めなかった本作を復刊したハヤカワの英断に感謝。

一人でも多くの方に読んでいただきたい作品です。

東西ドイツを隔てる壁の崩壊前夜の時代を背景に、一人の若者の運命が予期せぬ者達によって翻弄される。
知己の少ない外地で、寄る辺を失う者の不安が痛々しい。
偶然の出会いが、かろうじて危機を救いながらどうしようもない状況の中で何とか光明を見いだし、捨て身に生きてみる決断は、痛々しい。
前半のプロットがこうして敷かれ、後半はその謎解きといわば復習劇へと進む。
最終日へと、ある種気分を盛り上げながら次々起こる事件に、期待感が増していく。
と、全体プロットはこういう感じだが。。。。

前半部分のあれよあれよという進行に比べ、後半がどうも乱暴に思える。
せっかくの綿密な設定が、一つの謎解きに集約させているようで、うーん、これは残念。
だからおもしろい、だから奇抜という言い方もできるかもしれないけど。
事件の背景を結局、物語の流れではなく、説明、で終わらせたようで、物足りない。

背景、プロット、時代性など非情に幅の広い奥深いものだけに、落とし所が今ひとつ物足りない気がしたのは事実だ。やりきれない気持ちが残ってしまった。

気になっていた作家さんにデビュー。せっかくだからデビュー作から。
というわけで、本作を手にとりました。
面白かった。一気に読めました。
まだベルリンの壁が壊される前のドイツで話は始まります。
殺人の濡れ衣を着せられた主人公が追手や警察の包囲を潜り抜けて
東側へ身を隠すまでが前半。
5年を経た後半、事件の関係者たちに手紙が届き、雨の小樽に集められます。
そして物語は、核心へ。
物語は後半だけでも、かなりの面白さです。
前半も、じゅうぶん面白いんだけど蛇足っぽい感じで
私は無くても良かったかな、と思いました。
主人公が壁の向こうに逃げざるを得ない
説得力がいま一つなんです。
それでも読み終えたとき、胸に迫るものがありました。
何といっても主人公の母親が、魅力的なんです。
ぜひ、ページをめくって、この女性に会ってみてください。
