　近未来SFだけれど、奇妙に現実味をおびた世界。はちゃめちゃな大東京学園と、その地下の秘密のアングラ。精鋭の男子生徒たちがその間で揺れ動く脱走劇です。学園モノとSFの混ざった不思議なジャンルだけれど、魅力的な人物や背景の設定で、スリルを感じながらぐんぐん読み進む作品でした。「上と外」に近いものがあるかも。
　作中に散りばめられたオマージュから、20世紀がどれだけ魅力的な時代だったのかがうかがえます。巻末には20世紀用語解説がついているので、そちらと照らし合わせながら読み進めるとより世界観の深みが増すはず。ストーリーうんぬんよりもパロディ部分を楽しめるかどうかで好き嫌いが出てきそう。

なんというか，漠然とした世界観で入り込めません．

汚染された地球だとか，エリート学園だとか，
言っていることはわかるのですが説明が足りないようで，
いきなり「こういう設定です」とはじまって乗り切れません．
近未来でイメージが沸きづらいぶん，もう少し…と感じました．

作品内にちりばめられた20世紀サブカルの数々だとか，
バトルロワイヤル的な学園生活は確かにおもしろいのですが，
ピンと来ていないぶん，引きつけられるまでには．

序盤で世界観を掴めておけば変わったのかもしれませんが…．

日本人だけが地球に居残る。だ、なんてまずありえない。
そう、思ってしまう人は読まないほうがいいと思います。
恩田陸がＳＦ作品を書くのは珍しく、これを、ＳＦと読んでいいのかも、ちょっと不安。

いつものパターンではちょっとした架空の世界（日本なんだけど日本のどこかの・・・とか、東北方面なんだけど、正確には記しませんよ。とか、北海道の＊＊市を舞台に・・・etc）みたいな、架空的存在で物事が進む。
そんな作品が多い、恩田氏なのだから常に、この作品もいつも通りである。
「ロミオとロミオは〜」という、タイトルからもしかして・・・なんって展開はゼロ。アキラとシゲルの心の変化の仕方にも注目。
最初は、総長になる事だけを考えて進む彼らが【事実】を知りどのように、行動していくかが読みどころです

葛藤と友情

この世界では入試試験の仕方も変わっていて、結構面白い。
内容はかなり長いが、スムーズに物語が進むため、あまり長く感じない。
