近年読んだ本の中では最高に近い評価を自分の中ではしています。最近今一度読み返してみてやはり物語の熱さに感動しました。個人的にはこうした書き手の熱情が叩きつけられたような作品が好きです。今は表面的に面白いか面白くないか、で本が出版されているように感じるのでこうした「この作品を書くのだ！この作品にこのテーマをぶつけるのだ！」というものがひしひしと伝わってくる本がもっと出てほしいです。冲方さんの作品にはそうした感じがあるのでとても好きです。

冲方丁氏の『マルドゥック・スクランブル』の第一巻です。
少女娼婦であるルーン＝バロットは、賭博師であるシェル＝セプティノスに囲われている身ですが、ある日バロットは自分の偽造身分を知ろうとしてシェルに殺されそうになります。
瀕死の重傷を負ったバロットは、その後のパートナーとなるウフコックやドクターに助けられますが、生命保持のため "マルドゥック - 09" という緊急法令によって禁忌とされる科学技術を利用した体に改造され、その特殊能力を如何なく発揮します。
誰も自分を愛してくれなかったという傷を負った彼女は、ウフコックやドクターと共にシェルを法的に裁くために動きますが、逆に命を狙われるはめになります。

本書の面白さは、新しい能力を手に入れたバロットの活躍と、ウフコックという特殊な相棒との心の触れあい、シェル側の人間（？）であるボイルドとの対決など息をつかせぬアクションにあります。
『ピルグリム・イェーガー』の原作でもそうでしたが、冲方丁氏の緻密なストーリー仕立ては、決して読者を失望させることはないでしょう。

主人公ルーン・バロットは、一巻終盤でこういう。『Now Here（ここにいる）』と。
著者が脚本その他を担当した、ロボットアニメ『蒼穹のファフナー』でも同種の描写がある。

冲方　丁にとって、『生きる』ということは存在をアピールすることであり、それ即ち価値観を持つことで、それはいずれ『戦う』ことに発展する。
『戦う』のは何も力をぶつけ合う事ではない。
意見を交わすことも、知略をめぐらせる事も、言ってみれば、生きることはそれ自体が戦いだ。
こういう主張が強く渦巻いている。

これは戦いの物語。戦って、感じて、学んで、成長する物語。
虚ろだった少女が、ラストでは立派でかっこいい女性になってるではないか。
それが何より印象的で、緻密な描写もすべてそこに収束する。
その世界、ぜひ一読あれ。
