神林 長平
1953年新潟県生まれ。1979年、第5回ハヤカワ・SFコンテスト佳作入選作「狐と踊れ」で作家デビュー。第1長篇『あなたの魂に安らぎあれ』以来、独自の世界観をもとに「言葉」「機械」などのテーマを重層的に絡みあわせた作品を多数発表、SFファンの圧倒的な支持を受けている。『敵は海賊・海賊版』、本書の続篇『グッドラック戦闘妖精・雪風』などの長短篇で、星雲賞を数多く受賞(以上、早川書房刊)。1995年、『言壷』で第16回日本SF大賞を受賞した(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

２０年も前と考えられぬほど、恐ろしく完成度の高い作品。
親友のブッカー少佐を除けば、信じられるのは機械である雪風のみ、という主人公・深井零と、
戦闘機の機械知性である雪風との、外界意識の齟齬によるすれ違いが哀しく、そして恐ろしい。

しかし、この一冊だけでは、このシリーズの神髄を味わったとは言えない。

続編の『グッドラック　戦闘妖精雪風』を続けて読む事で、このシリーズの真なる素晴らしさが見えてくる。
この二冊を続けて読む事で、この作品がSFとしてだけでなく、哲学書としてもエンターテインメントとしても一流であることが分かるはず。

　非人間的な主人公深井零と，高性能戦闘機「雪風」との関係を軸に，コミュニケート不能な敵＜ジャム＞との戦闘がリアルに描かれていく。初めはその精緻なメカ描写のカッコ良さに魅かれて読み進めたのだが，次第に明らかになる＜ジャム＞，そしてコンピュータ群の意識に戦慄し，後は衝撃的なラストまで一気読みだった。と，これは私が旧版を読んだ時の話。

　約２０年の時を経て，加筆訂正された本書を読んでみたが，全く古さを感じなかった。
　加筆訂正の内容は，構成自体を大きく変えるようなものではないが，旧版を既読の方も，これを機会に再読されてはいかがか。
　本書は間違いなく日本ＳＦ史に残る傑作である。未読のＳＦファン，読むべし。

＜改＞の名の示すとおり、細かい部分が「改修」されたようですが、（あとがきで作者もいっているとおり）ストーリーそのものには、変わりないようです。しかし、２０年前の作品と読み比べると、物語の背景（奥行き）が増しているように感じるのは何故でしょう？

　限りなく機械に近い人間「深井零」、高度に発達した知能（？）を持ちつつあるフェアリイ空軍特殊戦所属の「偵察機：雪風」。彼らの奇妙な連帯感、すれ違い、裏切り。実体がみえない「敵」ジャムとの戦いのなかで生まれる不安感・・・。単に戦闘機が出てくるメカニックSFの分類とするには、あまりにももったいないと（私は）思います。

話の内容は、コンピュータ、機械生命体（ジャム？）とデジタルチックなのですが、それをアナログの代表である「本（活字）」で読むという感覚が、私は好きです。
では恒例のエピグラムを紹介して終わります。

「妖精を見るには、妖精の目が必要だ」

PS:続編「グッドラック」もおすすめです。
