5.0 out of 5 stars 連載当時話題になりました。もっと注目されてもいいのに・・・, 2007/6/8

「樹魔」はわずか65ページに数多くの情報が詰め込まれたSF少女マンガだ。読み切りの短編として雑誌に掲載されたため、短いページ数にまとめられているのだが、ストーリーの完成度が高いため、文字の多さも気にならず引きこまれてしまう。

「伝説」はその続編で120ページほどあるのだが、こちらのほうが逆にちょっと消化不良のような感じをうけるくらいだ。

「樹魔」がSF少女マンガだというのは、少女マンガ家がSFを描いたというのとはちょっとちがう。

萩尾望都さんや佐藤史生さんのSFマンガを、たとえば小説にするとして、そこで失われるものよりも、水樹さんの「樹魔」を小説にして失うもののほうが、はるかに大きいと思うのだ。

それは少女マンガ的なヴィジュアルで表現されている感情の部分だ。特に登場人物のせつなそうな表情が伝えるものが大きい気がする。

当時のSFファンにも評価されたストーリー構成（「伝説」は星雲賞のコミック部門を受賞している）を、SFではあらわになりにくい優しいハートが包みこんでいるのが、水樹さんの作品の魅力だと思う。

その優しさは『灰色の御花』や『天女恋詩』などに共通するものだ。

「伝説」のテーマは、かたちを変えて『イティハーサ』に受け継がれていると思う。より完成された表現で。

人類の進化をテーマにした、日本SFマンガの最高峰とも言える傑作。《サイエンス》と言うより、より《スピリチュアル》な観点から、人類の進化を描いたのは、まさに女性ならではの発想だと思います。《神秘主義》と《科学》の融合に成功した、非常に希有な傑作だと思います。
