「そして夜は蘇る」「私が殺した少女」「天使達の探偵」に続く、私立探偵・沢崎シリーズの第四弾。

およそ400日ぶりに東京に戻った沢崎は、11年前の夏の甲子園大会準決勝での八百長の疑惑から姉が自殺した魚住の依頼を受け、自殺の真相を追うこととなる。世界を代表するハードボイルド作家、レイモンド・チャンドラーをこよなく愛し、その文体にも影響をうける作者であるから、本作品のタイトルも、チャンドラーの代表作「長いお別れ」と「大いなる眠り」からとられたのであろう。本作も前3作に違わぬできで、決して期待を裏切らない。作者の作品の魅力は、もちろん私立探偵・沢崎の魅力と、そのチャンドラーへのオマージュである単文を主体とした文体からくるなんともいえぬ読後感であるが、もう一つ付け加えるとすれば、ミステリーとしての骨組みもしっかりしているところであろう。

各作品の最後で、遅筆をわびている作者であるが、本作も全作から5年をへて発行された。1995年の本作品発表後、ふたたび「長き眠り」に入ってしまったが沢崎シリーズの第二期のスタートが待ち遠しい。

なお、文庫版の巻末には、「死の淵より」という短編が、あとがきにかえて添えられており、作品の最後に「それは新たな事件の始まりだった。」と結ばれている。期待して次回作を待つとしよう。

４００日振りに西新宿に戻った私立探偵・沢崎は、浮浪者から依頼人が探していた事を聞かされる。
11年前の自殺の真相を探る依頼だが、周辺で次々トラブルが起こっていく。
そして、遂には沢崎自身にも絶対絶命の危機が・・・シリーズ第４作。

この作者は、実に良く文章を推敲することで知られる。
沢崎を主人公とした、長編としては3作目の本作も、実に5年もの間推敲が重ねられた。
次回作はなんと10年推敲することになるのだが・・

作品と作品の発表のあいだに、間断なく推敲を重ねていたのかどうかは知らないが、そうだと言われても驚かない、それほど密度の高い文章だと思う。
どのページでも良い。テイストを損なわずに、より短い文章に出来るか、一度トライしてみる事をお勧めする。
いかに考え抜かれた筋肉質の文章かわかる。

ミステリーとしても十分面白いし、どんでん返しも効いている。ハードボイルドの探偵物として、正に王道の作品でもある。
文庫版だけに加えられた「後書き」だけでも短編１作の価値がある。

しかし、本作の価値はそれだけではない。
文章そのものを楽しむ喜びを感じて頂きたい。
それこそが、読者が、5年も、10年も沢崎を待ち続ける大きな理由のひとつだから。

どうすればこの「沢崎」みたいな奴に慣れるのかな。世の中、今の世の自分を含めて、いけてない奴達が多いなか、どうすれば「かっこいい」奴になれるかな？登場人物達の設定にも魅力的です。それぞれ「かっこいい」ですよ。最後の謎時の場面にいたるまでの流れは、本の中にひっぱりこまれる力がありました。一つ一つの言葉や行動に意味をつけてられてるのは、作者のユーモアセンスを感じてしまいます。でも、原さんに一つ質問、沢崎の愛車「ブルーバード」の設定はなぜ？「ブルーバード」を表現される場面、私のお気に入りです。「いけてない車」が「かっこいい」のです。
