アーヴによる人類帝国は人類統合体によって制圧された星々を奪還すべく幻炎作戦を開始した！
ラフィールは突撃艦バースロイルの艦長としてジントはバースロイルの書記としてこの作戦に参加する！
作者に曰く、星界の戦旗は星界の紋章の続編ではなく、本編！だそうです。

やはりスペースオペラはこうでなくっちゃいけません。アニメではだいぶはしょられていましたから満足できると思います。前フェブダーシュ男爵の妹アトスリュアをラフィールの上官に置くなんてもうにくい演出です（笑）！

「戦旗」編は「紋章」の続編でありますが、本書のあとがきによれば「紋章」は外伝であって「戦旗」の方が本篇という事になっています。前作より３年、「アーヴによる人類帝国」は敵対する勢力「人類統合体」によって占領された星々を奪還するために「幻炎作戦」と呼ぶ大規模な軍事作戦を実施し、ラフィールは突撃艦バースロイルの艦長としてジントはその主計官として従軍する・・・というのが「戦旗」第１巻のストーリーになります。
本作は主に宇宙空間における戦闘シーンがメインに描かれているだけに、艦隊戦の描写を含めて宇宙戦争モノとしての面白さを充分に堪能する事が出来ました。また前作にも登場した帝国艦隊司令長官ドゥサーニュ皇太子やスポール提督にクファディス参謀長、本作からの登場であるビボース兄弟やラフィールの上官のアトスリュア、そしてラフィールの部下でありジントの同僚であるエクリュア、サムソン、ソバーシュといった個性ある面々が登場して作品に彩りを与えています。またこれらの人物同士のやりとりといったものも宇宙空間での戦闘描写と並ぶくらい本作を読む上での楽しみの一つであると考えています。
しかしながら「戦旗」編は「紋章」とは独立した物語というよりは、あとがきにも書かれているように「紋章」にて星界シリーズの世界観などを理解した上で読んだ方がいいという事になっています。という事は「紋章」と「戦旗」は一続きの物語であるといえますので、これから星界シリーズを読んでみたいと考えている方は「紋章」から読んでいくべきなのでしょう。

星界の紋章（３）の「あとがき」に著者が「これで終わりです。続きはありません。」なんて書いてあったのですが、続編がでました。

著者は「『戦記』が本編で『紋章』が外伝です」なんて言っていますが、「戦記」は「紋章」の続編です。先に「紋章」1,2,3の３冊を読んでから、本書を読みましょう。
「紋章」を読んで、アーブや帝国の事情などについて知っていることを前提として本書は書かれています。まずは「紋章」からです。
