1980年代から1990年代初めにかけて書かれたSF短編を8編収録しています。

表題作の「さらしなにっき」や「峠の茶屋」などノスタルジックな道具立ての中に、時間を超越するおなじみのSF的恐怖を滑り込ませていて、僕の大好きな作風です。僕は著者の作品では、長編・短編を問わず、ミステリーよりSFの方が好きなんですが、最近書いてくれないのが残念です。

本書では、各作品ごとに著者のコメントが挿入されており、執筆当時の著者の気持ちなどを他人事のように「評論」したり、「すっかり忘れていたが、なかなか面白い」などと感心したり、「この頃は明らかに小松左京の影響を受けていた」などと回顧しているのも面白いです。

「SFはなんといっても栗本の心のフルサト」「心を入れ替えて、ちゃんとプロパーっぽいSF短編なんていうものも書いてみることにしようかな」と書いてくれてるのがうれしいです。もっとも、この解説の書かれたのが1994年なのに、その後SFの新作が出たという話もないしなあ…、期待してますよ。
