5.0 out of 5 stars 稲見一良の提示する誇りと憧れに, 2000/11/18
稲見一良が山本周五郎賞を受賞した作品。 ブラッドベリの「刺青の男」にヒントを得たという連作小説だが、全６編のどれもが美しく切ない。 思うに小説だけでなくすべての創作物がそうだが、価値観の提示にこそほかならないと考える。何が美しく、何が醜いか。世の中をどう判断し、どう行動するかを、その作者なりの角度で捉え、発表するのが創造だ。

本書の中の1編「ホイッパーウィル」は、女性の１人もでないマンハントを描いたハードな中篇である。自分は稲見一良のもっとも濃い部分をこの中篇から感じる。彼が憧れ、美徳とし、また醜悪と感じた世の中の全てが凝縮されているような気がする。登場人物全てが真っ直ぐで、象徴的で衒いなく人生に切り込んでいく。そしてここには作者の価値観がハッキリと明示されている。 美しく厳しい自然。善悪の両面をそなえた人間。容赦ない社会の重圧。生ける物を襲う困苦。そして自尊心と誇りを失わない姿勢。

別の短編「デコイとブンタ」でもそうだ。 「密猟志願」「パッセンジャー」においてもそうした作者独自の、しかし普遍的な価値観が提示されている。

決して楽天的なロマンチストではない作者は、世の中の厳しさ不毛さを描いた上で、なおも輝きを失わない、理想や憧憬を描いている。

作者、稲見一良が見続けた人生は経験に裏打ちされた確かな手ごたえがある。小説を読む醍醐味、豊かな人生を知る醍醐味。その両方を味わえる本書。あまりに再読しすぎて自分はすでに３冊目を持ち歩いている。

いったいどうすれば、こんな文章が書けるのだろう。
どの文章ひとつとっても、気高さと美しさにあふれている。
この作品は山本周五郎賞受賞作だが、稲見一良の名を冠した賞の創設を望みたい。


頁をめくるたびに、ひとつの短編が終わるたびに、私は深いため息をつく。
この人の作品があまりにも少ないことに。

随分前のことになりますが、関西に仕事で出かけたとき宝塚に住んでいる友達に薦められた本です。

帰りの新幹線の中で読みました。
最初のページを開いた瞬間から、他のことは全て頭の中から消え去りました。

何時の間にか東京に着いていました。降りなければならない、この本を読むのを中断しなければならない、たったそれだけの事を、辛く、悲しく感じました。

私が稲見一良さんを知ったのはこの時でした。
そして、その時にはすでに稲見一良さんはこの世から旅立ってしまった後でした。

一生かけても、私には稲見さんのお書きになった言葉の一言に匹敵する言葉を書くことはできないでしょう。
この作品は、そんな言葉のカタマリです。
