『雪風』の零が「非常な戦士｣とされながらも泣いたり怒ったりしていたのに比べて、本作の宥現は本当に快・不快しか持たない。そうすることで、「感情とは何か」ということを極限まで突き詰めていったのがこの本だと思う。

感情の由来を時間においたことでＳＦらしい要素は強まり、神林氏の魅力でもある幻想的な世界が発展する。くるくると変化する舞台装置や物の概念を追うのには必死で、決して斜め読みできない。

「感情とは何か」それは読んでいるものには完璧には分からない。作中に与えられるのは、すべて仮定であり、比喩である。そこまでは書いてくれないのが神林氏だと、私は思う。

悲しい運命のチェイスを、章ごとに舞台の時空を移しながら、多面的に描いていく。見事なSF。

機械（戦車）の思考過程の描画がスゴい。また、「視覚が自分の感覚を空間に投影するように、感覚を時間軸に投影したものが感情だ」という仮定のもとに描かれる世界観や哲学そのものも面白い。そういうSFな面だけでなく、ところどころにある言葉そのものの美しさにも引かれる。−−まさに言葉使い師だ。

　神林作品の中でもグロテスクな味わいの強い一冊。
　著者の特徴である生物の変容性と、超越的な機械という二つの要素が混じり合っている。さらに刑事、意志疎通の不可能さなど、お馴染みのテーマが続出する。しかし、いまいち消化不良というか、全体としてのまとまりに欠けるように感じた。
　全編を通じて砂のイメージがあらわれるのだが、これほど気味が悪く描かれているのは珍しいくらい。神林氏の持つ常人との異質さを見せつけられた。
　よほどのファンでなければ、お勧めしにくい。
