1955年生まれ、ハンガリー系移民の血筋を引いている。ミネソタ州でプログラマーとして生計をたてていたが20代半ばで失業。妻のすすめもあって、失業後の数カ月で書き上げた『勇猛なるジャレグ』で1983年にデビュー

4.0 out of 5 stars 暗殺者ヴラドの楽しみな新シリーズが開始！, 2006/5/11
「主人公ヴラド・タルトシュの職業は暗殺者。種族は人間…だが、この世界では人間は少数派な存在」と異色なファンタジーです。
しかし、世界観がきちんと描かれ、相棒（使い魔）のロイオシュ達とのやりとりも良い感じのスパイスとなっていますので、ファンタジーらしいファンタジーとも言えます。

物語は、ヴラドが事件の渦中の状況を語るスタイルで、入手した情報を分析し、不可能な状況から解決策を見つけようと試行錯誤をしていく様子がテンポ良く描かれています。

本筋の事件（クエスト）は本巻のみできちんと解決していますので、読み終えたときの満足感がありました。
また、未解決の謎や伏線もふんだんに盛り込まれている為に、次の巻への期待感も大きくなる話でした。

妖術を使うドラゲイラ族と、呪術を使う東方人が住む世界が舞台のファンタジーです。

主人公は、ドラゲイラ社会に住む東方人の暗殺者ヴラド・タルトシュ準男爵。
彼の少年時代から始まり、暗殺のプロとして、多才な仲間と活躍するハードボイルド調の話です。

この、主人公の活躍を通じて、壮大な世界が目の前に展開してゆきます。
実にユニークで魅力的な世界です。。
正義と悪の対立でもなく、王国と王国の戦争でもなく、暗殺の話ですが、
背景となる世界が読むにつれ広がっていくのが楽しくて飽きません。

しかも、設定がしっかりしています。騎士のいた中世風の世界を舞台に使って、
ドラゴンや魔法を安易に登場させる安物のファンタジーとは一線を画しています。
ジャレグという存在も、小さい竜といった安っぽい設定ではありません。

話の展開も実に巧みで、壮大な世界を描くための、説明文のような解説調のダラダラした部分はありません。
アクション中心で展開してゆくので、飽きる間もなく山場の連続です。

シリーズ物になる予定だそうですが、これから先が楽しみです。
シリーズといっても、この1冊で話は完結しています。
一話完結型のシリーズなのだと思います。
