マキリップ,パトリシア・A.
1948年アメリカ、オレゴン州セイレムの生まれ。父の仕事の関係で少女時代にヨーロッパ生活を経験。帰国後、オレゴン州のサン・ホセ大学で学ぶ。文学修士号を取得したその年に最初の二作を発表し、翌年発表の『妖女サイベルの呼び声』で第1回世界幻想文学大賞を受賞するなど、作家として恵まれたスタートを切った。その後、『イルスの竪琴』3部作、『ムーンフラッシュ』『ムーンドリーム』などの名作をつぎつぎに発表し、ファンタジイ界に確固たる地位を築く。2002年に発表した『影のオンブリア』も高い評価を受け、2003年度の世界幻想文学大賞を受賞している

繁栄を続ける美しい公国オンブリア
それに寄り添うように、公国の陰にもう一つの
影のオンブリアが幻のように、けれども現実に存在している。

久々に邦訳されたマキリップの新刊は
吟遊詩人が奏でるバラッドのように、詩的な美しさと流れるような旋律が
物語全編にちりばめられていて
美しいといっても、耽美にすぎず
ファンタジーといっても、冒険活劇でもなく
アニメ化したら……実写化したら……とても面白そう。というのでもなく
文章で読ませる幻想文学的ファンタジーの面目躍如です。

マキリップは長編になると
人によって好き嫌いが別れやすいのかなーとと思うのですが
この長さだとしっとりしたファンタジーが読みたいという人には
薦めやすいかな。

と、文章とか全体のことばかり褒めておいて
自分が気に入ったのは割とキャラクターです（笑）

オンブリア

光と闇の都なり

人々の口にのぼる、おとぎ話や伝説。それを読んでしまった。
伝説の英雄に仕立て上げられる人は、
勇気を持って何か強大な悪に立ち向かったわけでない。
戦いに赴いたわけではない。
むしろ、静かに、守りたいものを守ろうと生きた。
最後の最後まで読んで、
あ、この出来事は、伝説になったのね。
そう思えるもの。

オンブリアの大公の死とともに、物語は動き出す。
大公の妾妃は幼い大公の息子に、人形を使って物語る。
　この世で一番古い都。
この世で一番きれいな都、この世で一番の力と、豊かさを持つ都の物語。
得体の知れない人々の巣くう城の中、妾妃は幼い大公に物語る。
白髪の大公の甥、＜黒真珠＞とよばれる老女。ほんの少し血のつながりを持つ貴族たち。都の地下の魔女と蝋人形の少女。

１冊で終わってしまうのが本当に惜しい。魅力的な人物のほかにも、城、町並みといった背景にもそそられる。
その中を駆け抜ける風も感じられるのではないだろうか。

約30年前早川ファンタジー文庫開幕の頃登場した「妖女サイベルの呼び声」、それに続く「イルスの竪琴３部作」はすばらしい作品でした。山岸涼子さんの挿絵も美しかった。訳者の方の後書きを見ると、これらに続いてマキリップものを続々と翻訳したいという意思がうかがえました。
しかし、作品数の割に翻訳数は少なく、最近になるまで彼女の小説の日本語訳が出版されることはあまりありませんでした。これ程の作者の作品がなぜ翻訳されなかったか、この「影のオンブリア」を読んでわかりました。
先の二作に比べ、読んでわくわくする感じが起こりません。設定は面白いですが、結末の付け方はご都合主義のように思えます。根っからのマキリップファンは面白いと思うかもしれませんが、ファンタジーファンで「妖女サイベルの呼び声」と「イルスの竪琴３部作」を読んでマキリップに興味を持った方々にはお勧めできません。
