海の中で、「やはり夫がいるわ」と未亡人の女人魚のメラは思い立ち、メラは尻尾を二本の足に変え、陸地へと降り立ち、ハンフリーの元を訪ねることにした。

一方、翼あるセントールの家族と一緒に暮らしていたグウェニィはゴブリンの首領だった父親が急逝したため、ゴブリン山に帰らなければならなくなった。グウェニィは首領の後継者の座を得るため、異母弟ゴブルと争うことを決意した。
チェとジェニーの力を借りて、グウェニィは様々な試練に挑戦する。

人食い鬼のオクラは相当に作者の思い入れがあるキャラクターで、健気で可愛らしいです。
シリーズに相応しく、人食い女鬼としての自覚を求めて旅をしました。
メラ、オクラと旅するアイダは、他の二人に比べると陰が薄いのですが、ニンフと沼カワウソに育てられたせいで、イマイチ、人生が薄っぺらいのですね。

いつも元気なジェニーを抑えて、今回はグウェニィを中心に旅をしましたが、健闘したものの育ちのいいお嬢さんなので、メラたちに（メラのお色気に）インパクトで負けたようですね。
結局、メラとそのお色気が、この本の大半を占めているような気がします。

今作は、大人チーム子どもチームの２グループの探索の旅が交互に描かれます。大筋としてはゴブリン娘のグウェンドリンの首長継承問題で、１２冊目「セントールの選択」の直接的な続編と言えるでしょう。“大人の陰謀”にかかわらざるを得なくなるグウェニィ・チェ・ジェニーのチーム、ハンフリーに答えてもらえずあちこち旅することになる女人魚メラのチーム、両方の旅は交差して見事な結末に収束します。

良き魔法使いハンフリーも復帰しましたし、王家一家始めおなじみのキャラクターも健在。何度も出ている女悪魔メトリア、ナーガ族の兄妹も重要な役割を果たしています。チェの役割、メラのパンティの色（笑）など前作までの謎が一部判明しているのも面白いところ。新しいキャラクターの登場は次回に!繋がる伏線なのかも？

解説の谷山浩子氏（！）がおっしゃるように、前の話を読んでいなくても問題なく楽しめる物語です。とはいえ、前作までを読んでいた方がより楽しいのは確か。１作目の主人公ビンクから数えると、ついにひ孫まで誕生しており、各キャラクターの辿ってきた物語の面白さは言うまでもありません。

言葉遊びと個性的なキャラクター、独特のルールの中で描かれる魔法王国ザンスの荒唐無稽な世界を楽しんで下さい♪

内容に関する評価はともかくとして、谷山氏の解説は、最悪だ。
無論これは肩のこらないファンタジー小説だ、読者も難しい書評なぞ求めてはいないのは違いないが、最初の3刊しか読んでいなかった、と平然と書ける神経がわたしには理解できない。
素朴な感想を書くだけなら誰にでもできる。

間の11冊を読んでおらず久しぶりにこのシリーズを読んだのだとしたら、
普通の感覚ならその年月に驚き、そして原書がまだ続いているのか気になるのではないだろうか。そして、ほんの少しでも責任感があるならば、この「ゴブリン娘と魔法の杖」が、何年前に出版されたものか調べ、驚くのではないか。
