第1作の老人と宇宙ほどのインパクトはないが、それでもドキドキしながら読める。ちょっとテーマをひねりすぎかな。父と子の物語ではあるがもう少しそこのところを長く描いて欲しかったな。最後の逆転劇はまあ伏線を利かせているが、何か物足りない。ブーティンがあまりに単細胞で近視眼なので、かなり興ざめしたのは事実。こんな奴に地球の命運を託すような画期的開発が出来るわけがない・・・と、未だに会社員根性が抜けない自分でした。それから、最強の異星種族のはずなのに、近接戦闘はからきし弱いのは納得できない。ジェム・ハダーの方が何倍も強いということだな？

海外小説には往々にしてしょうもない邦題が付いているのですが、このシリーズの邦題はセンス抜群だと思います。内容的に飛び抜けた傑作とまで言えない前作を買ったのは、ひとえにふざけた邦題にありました。『Old Man's War』を『老人と宇宙』と訳し、さらに「宇宙」に「そら」というルビを振るというセンスには脱帽です。

この続編を書店で見つけたときは、絵柄と『遠すぎた星』という邦題を見た瞬間、「あ、これは『老人と宇宙』の続編かも！」とすぐにピンときました。しかしこの邦題に至っては、『The Ghost Brigades』という原題を完全無視ですよ。しかも、『遠すぎた橋』のもじりだと思うんですが、ちゃんと「はし」と「ほし」が韻を踏んでいるという懲りよう。悪ノリがエスカレートしています。

「老人と海」、「遠すぎた橋」と来て、次回作『The Last Colony』は何をもじった邦題を付けてくれるのか、今からとても楽しみです。皮肉ではなく、マジで。

内容も「飛び抜けた傑作とは言えない」と書きましたが、安心して読める水準には充分に達しているので、SFファンであれば買って損はしないと思います。

まさか2作目が出るとは思っていなかったので、見つけて即購入しました。
今回は、ちょっとスケールが小さい、限定された中での話です。
一作目のジョン・ペリーは出てこないのですが、こんどは特殊部隊であり、ペリーとともに戦ったジェーン・セーガンが活躍します。
そして、ゾーイという新キャラの少女が登場して・・・
この作品自体はインパクトに欠けるのですが、3作目のためには必要なストーリーでした。
