ランディス,ジェフリー・A.
1955年、アメリカ、ミシガン州生まれ。マサチューセッツ工科大学(MIT)で物理学の理学士号と、電子工学の理学士号および理学修士号を、ブラウン大学で固体物理学の博士号を取得。現在、NASAのグレン研究所で火星探査プロジェクトに携わる科学者作家である。1984年、『アナログ』誌に発表したノヴェラ“Elemental”でデビュー。その後、「ディラック海のさざなみ」(88年)でネビュラ賞ショート・ストーリー部門を、「日の下を歩いて」(91年)と「人は空から降ってきた」(2002年)で、それぞれヒューゴー賞ショート・ストーリー部門を受賞している。2000年に発表された『火星縦断』で、ローカス賞第一長篇部門を受賞した

メカなどの描写が非常に緻密だ。
有人火星飛行は、行きよりも、帰りの方が、はるかに困難を伴う。
そして一行は、火星に立ち往生してしまうという、深刻な事態に陥る。

そして、火星の北極に存在するという、帰還用宇宙船を目指して、６０００キロを、ひたすら走破する。
物語の骨格はかように単純だが、その過程が、リアルな描写で、詳しく描かれ、迫力十分だ。

特筆すべきは、それぞれの章のタイトルが、乗組員の名前になっている。
それぞれの隊員の、地球での、人間物語が、赤裸々に描かれる。
本書の半分は火星、半分は地球が舞台なのだ。

物語には、様々な哀しい前提がある。
そして、優秀な隊員の要件は、人間的であってはならないらしい。

ただし、物語は、隊員達の生い立ちにも重点が置かれている。
その点で、重厚なＳＦに仕上がっている。

「NASAの現役研究者による・・・」という前触で、以前よりSF関連雑誌などで大絶賛されていたこともあり、かえって「無機質で専門用語満載な科学小説」をイメージしてしまい敬遠していましたが、読み始めたら「速攻読破」（約３日間）でした。
最新科学に裏打ちされた火星の風景や探査チームのテクノロジーを、私のような「文系SF野郎」にも理解できるだけでなく「堪能させてくれる」表現力には感服です。
壮大な火星探索物語と並行して明かされてゆく登場人物たちの過去と秘密（「ハイペリオン」を思い出したのは私だけ？）、そして「限られた帰還船の座席」を巡る隊員間での疑心暗鬼と事件。若干ラストが弱い感も否めませんでしたが、本当に最後の最後まで息をつく間もないサスペンスに満ちた展開に、これほど途中で本を置くのがツライ！と感じたのは久しぶりでした。

本当に最後の最後までどうなるのか予想が難しかった．探査隊に選ばれる程の優秀な隊員たちの過去の話が盛り込まれているのですが，初めに読んだ時にはたいして重要と思わなかった台詞などが読み終わって振り返ると重大な意味を持っていたことに気づかされました．そして，何とも言えない最後の2ページの描写と最後の1行．ネタバレになるので言えませんが，なぜこの人がこんなことをしたのかを絶妙に説明していました．うーむ，と唸らされました．もちろん，評判通り火星の描写や探査隊の装備の解説は本当の記録を読んでいるかのようにリアルでした．
