スティーヴンスン,ニール
1959年、アメリカのメリーランド州生まれ。ボストン大学で、物理学と地理学を専攻した。卒業後、車の運転手や農作業、中華料理店の下働きなど、さまざまな職業を経験する。1984年、長篇The Big Uでデビュー。1995年に刊行した『ダイヤモンド・エイジ』は、ヒューゴー賞とローカス賞を受賞、21世紀を担う人気作家の地位を不動のものとした。1999年発表の『クリプトノミコン』も、ローカス賞を受賞している

圧倒された。物語は、多くの近未来ＳＦ同様、この特異な世界の存在を当たり前の前提として受け入れている読者に向けて語られるという形で進むのだが、その前提とされている世界があまりに独創的で大きな広がりをもっているので、読み始めたとき、あまりのわからなさに戸惑い、読み通せるかたじろいだが、読み進めていくと、そのわからなさがむしろ楽しく、快感になっていった。最後までわかりにくいことはわかりにくく、わからないこともいろいろと残るのだが、物語の世界に入っていくと、語られないことの背後にも膨大な世界が広がっていることが自然に感じられ、自分はのぞき窓から膨大に広がるこの特異な世界の一部を垣間見たのだという気持ちになっていく。ＳＦ読者以外の人にも読んで欲しい。

2.0 out of 5 stars どこがヒューゴー賞なのかよくわからない。, 2006/6/20
「若き淑女のための絵入り初等読本」、このアイディアはすばらしい。

しかし、クラークやアシモフで育った私にとって、この本全体に漂う中途半端
さをどう説明すればよいのだろう。細かいエピソードを積み上げてひとつのス
トーリーにするのは別にかまわないと思えるのだが、個々のエピソードの連絡
がどのくらい取れているのかというと、どうなのだろうという気がする。そも
そもストーリーの脈略がうまくつかめなかった。そして、あの終わり方。もの
すごく中途半端という気がしたのは私だけだろうか。

　ガジェットOK、ディテールまあまあ、キャラクター意味不明なものもいく
つか、ストーリーにいたっては？がいっぱい。これがヒューゴー賞、ローカス
賞の受賞作である。

　もう私は、現代欧米SFを読めない体なのかもしれない。(泣)

本筋と直接関係のない情景描写があまりにも多いです。
分厚い本ですが、半分近くは（身の回りの小道具なども含めた）世界観の説明に費やしている気が・・・そのわりに心理描写が少なく、登場人物の人となりも結局よく分からず。

また、描かれている未来世界が（現代の延長線上にあるような）いかにも実現しそうな社会ではなく、作者の好きなものをごった煮にした奇怪な社会なのでどうにも馴染めませんでした。リアリティの無いフィクションはただのファンタジーです。

言葉は悪いですが、所詮は中国オタク・漫画オタクのガイジンが書いた設定資料集、という程度の本にしか思えませんでした。
台詞、暗喩、行間を駆使して最小限の文章で無限の世界を描いていた昔のSFと比べると、分厚いわりにどうにも小粒な世界でしたね・・・。
