SF作家は星の数ほどいらっしゃいますが、
その中でもこの人ありと謳われるアーサー・Ｃ・クラーク
最後の作品になるはずだったのが本書です。
本書の粗筋は『軌道エレベーターの建設話』の一言で足ります。
ともすれば建築工学の解説書にしかならないようなガジェットから、
切なく、儚く、そして美しい物語を、瑞々しい筆致で紡ぎ出した力量は
流石と言えましょう。　その根底には著者の、科学、技術、
そして人類に寄せる信頼と優しい眼差しが感じ取れます。　
このテイストこそ、まさにアーサー・Ｃ・クラーク作品の真骨頂でしょう。
本書の最大の難点は、巻末で著者御自身が種明かしをされているとおり、
舞台となるスリランカが軌道エレベーターの建設に適した位置に無いことですが、
本書のストーリーの魅力の前には瑣末な事と思えてしまいます。　
大好きな作品ではありますが、少々感傷的過ぎると感じられる方も
いらっしゃるかもしれませんので、星４つとさせて頂きました。
断筆宣言撤回以降のクラークの作品は ... 本作品を凌駕するものを
とうとう遺されなかったように感じられるのが残念です。

クラークは「楽園の泉」を書いた後、絶筆宣言をしました
彼の最後の作品になるはずでした
約束は守られず次々と駄作を発表しました
本作はスリランカに宇宙エレベーターを建設する話です
スリランカは赤道から離れているため宇宙エレベーターには適していません
ヤッカガラ宮殿が出てきますが一度は行ってみたい場所です
この作品は名作ですがこれ以後は駄作のオンパレードになります

楽観的過ぎて、アイディアが無造作に詰め込まれ過ぎで、人間の描き方がプレーン
で、根本アイディアに無茶な虚構が組まれていて、泣けてくるほど「良い人」っぽい
よそ者が出てきたりして、飽き足らない感じを抱いたりもしたけれど。

とても大好きな作品。
お勧めはしずらいけど星は五つです。
