前作『ヒューマン』から本作の間に、日本のネット社会では「モヒカン族」ムーブメントがあった。これがそのままこのシリーズの主題にマッチしているということに、読み始めてすぐこれに気づいてしまったときは、思わず「あっ」と声を上げてしまった。

つまり、このシリーズにおけるネアンデルタールたちは、まんまモヒカン族なんである。徹底した合理精神、問題解決には技術を持ってのぞむその姿勢、どこから見てもモヒカン族だ。なるほど、読んでいてネアンデルタール人社会にどうしようもなく惹かれるわけがわかった。

さらに作者はホモ・サピエンスのムラ人っぷりをわざと強調して描いているので、その対比はさらに明確になっている。典型的なムラ人であるジョック・クリーガーの描写はまさにそれ。結果的に、ネアンデルタール人描写にちっとも新鮮味がなくなってしまった上に、話の流れがたいへん読みやすくなってしまい、読書の面白さが減ってしまったのである。翻訳を待っている間に新しい科学的発見があって、設定自体が台無しになってしまうSFは少なくないが、まさかこっち方面から攻められるとは思いもしなかった。

もちろん、小説としての面白さは残る。前作で明かされた「人類存亡の危機」は、まさかという形で利用され、エピローグとあわせて、なかなか楽しく笑えるオチがつく。後半語られるかなりムチャなフェミニズム思想もそうだが、実はこれ、ソウヤーはギャグ小説として書いてたんじゃないかと勘ぐってしまう。モヒカン族はそのムーブメント自体が「ネタ」なわけで、そう考えると相乗効果を楽しめる余地もあるかもしれない。

~これまでどちらかというと地味に展開してきただけに、
そのままじっくりと話を進めてくれたら良かったと思うのですが
（特に事件が起きず／長くても、抜群に読みやすいし）、
映画的なサスペンス要素と、
『ターミナル・エクスペリメント』のようなラストの拡張、
『イリーガル・エイリアン』のようなおまけが入っているのは、
サービスのしすぎで、逆~~にバランスを崩しているような感じもなくはありません。
『フレームシフト』的な路線で終始しても良かったのではないでしょうか…。

ここに来て、前２作から折に触れて描かれてきた
“神／信仰心”の問題がクローズアップされて来ます。
基本的には無信仰の日本人からすると信仰心は脳の機能である、
というのは比較的受け入れやすいと思うのですが、$N~~$いちおうキリスト教圏である作者は、
どういう塩梅でこのテーマを扱ったのでしょうか…。
確かに『ターミナル・エクスペリメント』のバリエーションとして見れば
ＳＦ作家らしい切り口、とは思いますが…。~

SFどんちゃん活劇です。3部作の中で、いちばん軽いですね。でもずいっずいっと読んでしまう面白さはあります。ただ、地球磁場と人間の精神に関わる話は、前2作で伏線でかかれていたにしては、最後の展開はお粗末と思う。もっとえぐってほしかった。
