肉体を捨て、自らの精神をソフトウェア化した人類が、銀河系スケールで迫る危機に瀕して宇宙に進出する＜ディアスポラ＞計画を発動させるというハードSF。

数学・物理学的な広範な知識で理論武装された文体は、たしかに万人向けではないと多くの場所で書かれるのも無理はないでしょう。

作中に登場する物理理論が精緻化・厳密化してゆく過程は、＜ディアスポラ＞の驚異的な旅の射程と一対一の写像となっていて、そこにとどまることを、つまりはページをめくることを止めさえしなければ、読み進めるほどに宇宙の真の姿が語られてゆくのは、そもそもSFにだけ与えられた特権的な喜びといっていいはず。ワームホール、多次元宇宙、多宇宙解釈、超弦理論、といった最新の宇宙理論を追いかけるのが好きな人には、目に映るべくもない世界をこうして垣間見せてくれるイーガンの想像力に酔いしれることができるはずです。

もっとドラマチックな展開が好きな読者にとっては、直接的に訴えるドラマが少ない作品ではありますが、＜ディアスポラ＞から脱落していった登場人物たちが、なぜそこで留まろうとしたのかを想像することもまた、宇宙と、それに対峙した人類の姿を感傷抜きで描き出してくれていて、興味が絶えません。

読んでる最中、ずーっと「試されてる」という感じが抜けず。何を試されてるかというと、理系度というか。数学で落ちこぼれていた人は劣等感にさいなまれるだろう。

解説で、本書で一番難解なのは出だしの部分と書かれているが、大嘘である。日ごろからコンピュータに接していれば、理屈はわからなくてもイメージするのはたやすいはずだ。が、そのあとに延々と続く、5次元とか6次元とか12次元とか無限次元とかの幾何学を文字だけで語るにおいては、とてもついていけない。傑作中篇だった「ワンの絨毯」とか、ワームホールとたんぱく質の類似性とか、トランスミューターの遺物とか、個々のアイデアはメチャメチャ面白いのだが。

そう、この本、小説としての完成度は決して高くない。各章は基本的に独立していて、それぞれが長編一本分のアイデアをぶち込んだイーガンの実験室だ。ストーリーには重きを置いていない。読者は章が変わるたびにまったく違う舞台装置に放り込まれる。小説を読んでいるというよりは、ゲームをプレイしているという感覚が近い。

というわけで、「SFやっててよかったよ~」と心底思えるヨロコビはある。そういう意味では五つ星。でも、こんなに読み手を選ぶ本を、人様にオススメできるわけがない。わかったふりをして絶賛する気には(まだ)なれない。自分の責任においてのみ、手に取るべき本である。

流して読むには少々難解ですが
腰を据えて読めば面白くなっていく事は請け合いです。

邪道かもしれませんが、判り難い点が有ればメモでも取りながら
事項を整理して読み勧めて行くと良いと思います。

最後のページを読んだ後に、再読の面白さが感じられる作品です。
