『ホミニッド』に続く＜ネアンデルタール・パラドックス＞シリーズの第２弾。

チューブを通すだけ、という暫定的な方法ですが、
２宇宙間の通路が確保され、ポンターと外交官トゥカナが再びこの世界を訪れます。
そこで小さな事件が起こるのですが、メインはメアリとポンターの愛情と、
ポンターからみたこの宇宙の人間たち（主にアメリカ人）の持っている
矛盾点を指摘することに向けられています。
トゥカナがとった交流の方法や進展などはちょっと楽観的すぎるのですが、
このあたりはソウヤーならではといえるでしょう。

明らかに人間とは異なるネアンデルタール人のポンターに
メアリが惹かれる理由づけのためにレイプ事件があった、
というプロット配置はなかなか説得力があると思います。

地磁気の異変というのが冒頭に描写されるくらいで、
最後になるまで大きなセンス・オブ・ワンダーは出てこないのですが、
それなのにグイグイ読ませるのは、
やはりアメリカの持つ矛盾をポンター（カナダ人ソウヤー）が指摘する、
という見聞録／思弁ＳＦ的なところにあるのでしょう。

ソウヤー作品には珍しく女性が主人公だったり
（ソウヤー作品の定番通り、本当の主人公は中年のおっさんであるポンターかもしれませんが）、
セックス描写が細かかったりするのですが、
これも２つの世界／種族の差異を描くための必要な要素の１つといえます。

次の完結編では最後に明かされた世界の謎と危機が
どう回避／描かれるのかが最大の興味となりそうです。

三部作の二作目。偶発的なファーストコンタクトだった前作に対し、今作は少し計画的になり、ますますファーストコンタクトSFの様相を呈してくる。まぁ、そのつもりで読めばいいのだが。

ベトナム戦没者記念碑前のシーンはなかなか感動的だし、それに続く議論は、迫力もあり納得もいく。ネアンデルタールの世界観は、理性的で論理的。趣味に合う。あっちの世界に住みたいかと聞かれれば、ちょっと躊躇するけど。樹の家には住んでみたいが。

次作に続く謎(というか大問題)や、波乱の予感を含ませて終わるので、できれば次作が出てから読みたかったところ。

1作目の冒頭の忌まわしい事件の犯人探索が伏線となって、ポンターとメアの恋愛が発展する話なんですが。
ソウヤーの書きたかったことは、本の丁度真ん中辺でポンターが叫ぶ「みんなもういないんです。その事実に直面することが...」にこめられているのではないでしょうか。また、ネアンデルタール(バラスト)で本来完全無欠であるポンターが、最後に暴挙に出てしまうあたりも、ソウヤーがヒューマン(グリシン)のおろかさをポンターに投影して見せているのだと思います。
ただ、3部作(まだハイブリッドは読んでないのですが)の中篇としては、あまり話しの展開がない。また、先に書いた主題についても、もっと赤裸々に書いてほしかった。それで星1つ減点。
