マーティン,ジョージ・R.R.
1948年、アメリカ、ニュージャージー州生まれ。幼少年期からSF、ファンタジイ、ホラーなどのジャンル小説とコミックスを愛読し、71年、SF短篇「ヒーロー」でデビューを果たす。70年代は、いずれもヒューゴー賞を受賞した「ライアへの賛歌」(74年)、「サンドキングズ」(79年)などのSF短篇作家として活躍。80年代から90年代半ばにかけては、ホラーやモザイク・ノベル『ワイルド・カード』、テレビドラマの脚本などを中心に執筆する。96年、氷と炎の歌 第一部『七王国の玉座』を発表。現代最高のエピック・ファンタジイとされるこのシリーズは、第三部まで発表され、全作がローカス賞を受賞している

あの名作「サンドキングス」のジョージ・R･R･マーティンの連作集が出ていると知って、１冊目、２冊目と早速手に入れ、夢中で読み終わりました。「宇宙一あこぎな商人」とありますが、ほんとはね、そうじゃないんです。強大なパワーを持つ方舟の支配者である彼の視点は、限りなく神に近いのかもしれません。最終話「天の果実」には、単なるエンターテイメント以上の手ごたえがあります。いやー、堪能しました!

そもそもジョージ・R・R・マーティンには大ヒット中の
「氷と炎の歌」以外に「サンドキングズ」「フィーバードリーム」
などの傑作があるのですが、この「タフの方舟」シリーズは
マーティンのいわゆる「千の世界（サウザンド・ワールド）」の
一環を描いたものです。

ですから大ざっぱな言い方ですが、すべての作品が
どこかでつながっているんですね。
本作もどことなく「氷と~」との関連をうかがわせるところがあって興味深い。

また１巻ではタフの「あこぎ」ぶりがそれほど発揮されていなかった感がありますが、
今回は一味違うところも書かれていて読み出したら止まりません。
「氷と~」にはまった方、また１巻の「禍つ星」を面白いと思った方、必読です！

追記：マーティンワールドの原点「サンドキングズ」の発展形とも言えるので、
ファンの方はぜひハヤカワに「サンドキングズ」復刊希望のお便りを出しましょう！

　こちらは脇役が魅力的。トリーは総相になって一層したたか。タフとまともにやりあえるのは彼女だけだ。「わが名はモーセ」に出てくるジャイミ・クリーンの軽い三枚目ぶりがお茶目。
　タフの性格が商魂たくましくなったと感じるのは、うち２作品が初期のものだから。巻末の訳者解説が丁寧で、助かる。「天の果実」「魔獣売ります」とも、解決策に意外性はないが、もって行き方がうまい。
「サンドキングズ」のときに、新機軸やアイデアより既存のＳＦアイテムを使いこなすのがうまい、と評されていたマーティンらしいかも。
　作品を発表順ではなく作品内の時間順に並べ替えた編集方針も○。
