マッケイドは元地球帝国軍人の賞金稼ぎ。
高額な賞金首を追って地球にやってきたのだが、
軍から逃亡した、かつての上官を追う仕事を引き受けることになる。
「地球帝国」「辺境に出没する宇宙海賊」「帝国の敵イルローン人」
という三つどもえの世界の中で、スピーディーに物語は展開していく。

マッケイドは、元軍人なだけに、武器の心得はあるものの、
特殊な技能があるわけではなく、機転と話術、素早い行動、
そして道中で知り合う仲間達の活躍で、危機を乗り越えて行く。

語り口は淡々としていて、贅肉がなく簡素にまとまっているという印象。
正直、展開を急ぎすぎているように感じる箇所もあるものの、
ページをめくる手が止まらず、一気に最後まで読ませる。

ラストは少々物足りない感じもあるが、シリーズの序章と考えれば、
続刊以降のマッケイドの活躍に期待が持てるというものだろう。

本書はＳＦというより、スペースオペラ（宇宙冒険活劇）である。
純粋なＳＦファンには物足りないだろうが、
ＳＦ初心者やライトノベル読者にはお薦めしたい作品だ。

「宇宙の賞金稼ぎ」　正直手垢の付いた設定を、どう料理してくれるのか？という不安はあったが、杞憂に終わり一安心ｗ本格SFファンには「軽い！」などと一蹴されそうな作品かもしれないが、この手のジャンルに目が無い人には、理屈抜きで愉しんで貰いたい。シリーズ物らしいので、続編の早期敢行を望む。

軍人崩れの賞金稼ぎが地球存亡を懸け人探しをする話。
主人公は中々機知に富んだ伊達男だが、周りに振り回されやすい(物語上)。

話の展開が早く、ミリタリーな知識など少し分かりづらい部分もあるが、二転三転する人間関係、スピーディな戦闘描写など読みごたえはあり、続きが気になる。


個人的にイラストは満点。
