ハードSFの旗手であるグレッグ・イーガンの短編集その２です。とにかくすごい作家で、発表する作品ほとんどが、なんらかの賞をとる。内容も、非常に科学的に最先端のきわどいところを取り上げています。
得意とするテーマは、量子力学とアイデンティティ。まさに現代ハードSFの集大成というか、もはやSFのねたは出尽くしてしまっていて、この２点くらいしか真剣に、新しい視点を通して語られる物語もないのかも知れません。で、彼の作品はその新しい視点や、物語の構成方法が、ずばぬけておもしろいのです。
他人の脳みそを、自分のお腹で育てる「適切な愛」。量子論の世界を、緊迫したレスキュー劇として描く「闇の中へ」。記憶やアイデンティティは、データとして転送できるのか「移相夢」。ウィルスハザードをややコミカルに描いた「道徳的ウィルス学者」。などなど、素直に「すごいな」と思える短編が９つも。これはお得だ。
表題作である「しあわせの理由」では、これでもかというくらいに細かいプロットでお話が構成されています。脳内麻薬による幸福感。それが、ガン細胞と一緒に破壊されたあとの、幸福感のない状態。さらに、それを補うためにダミー神経を埋め込まれた主人公の葛藤。しあわせの基準をコントロールできるとしたら、人はどのようにこの世のできごとと折り合いをつけていけばいいのか。
短編集その１である「祈りの海」（テーマはアイデンティティ）と、長編「宇宙消失」（これは量子力学がテーマ）もお勧めです。

様々なSFの形態があり進化してきましたが、これは現時点でのひとつの頂点といえると思います（他にも頂点はあるが）。イーガンはもっとバリバリのハードかと先入観があり今まで避け気味でしたが、この作品を読んで己の不明を恥じました。
これはSFファンはもとより、むしろSFを毛嫌いしているような方に是非読んでいただきたい。少し今の「常識」に対する見方が揺さぶられるような感覚こそ、「センスオブワンダー」なのではないでしょうか？
表題の短編もお気に入りです。

最後に収録されている短編のタイトルがついた短編集なんですが、その中でも「ボーダー・ガード」が圧巻でした。イーガンの作品に根底に常に流れている、人間の限界に対する慈愛の念をメインテーマにした作品です。読み終えたとき、目に涙がわいてきました。通勤途中の電車の中だったんですが...
