私は、いままで同じ文庫本を何度も読むことはありませんでした。
が、「3001年終局への旅」は、違いました。

プロローグにある「ファーストボーン」魁種族に関するさらりとした記述だけでも、興味深いです。
このくだりは、いわゆる2001年に対する解答にも当たると思います。

2001年も2010年も映画化されましたが、それぞれ違った良さがあって、個人的にはどちらも好きです。
3001年が映画化されたら、これは見応えありそうです。
美しい映像、素晴らしい未来技術、類稀なる科学考証、そしてジョーク。

私は、またこれを読んで、自分だけの映像を思い浮かべて楽しみます。

「宇宙の旅」４部作の一応の結末。

人類の進化に干渉し、目覚しい成果を挙げた「魁種族」のプロジェクトの道具「モノリス」。
その正体がこの作品で明確になり、２００１年にＨＡＬの暴走で宇宙空間に放り出された「フランク・プール」が海王星軌道上で１０００年振りに救出され、その後の「ボーマン」「ＨＡＬ」との再会の中で、モノリスが人類に脅威を与える存在として立ちはだかり、これを破壊する作戦に参加する・・・・

正直言って、人類にとって宇宙とは？神とは？の問いに強引に回答を出した感は否めないが、最新科学技術の知識を駆使した描写には、頭が下がる思いである。

そして、「魁種族」の目的が地球破壊でなくもっと別の目的がある事を悟ったところでこの物語は幕を閉じるが、消えたモノリスからの交信が帰ってくるのが約１０００後。
人類は約１０００年平和が保障された訳だが、４００１年に何がおこるのか？人類の進歩はどうなるのか？
興味が尽きない結末である。
作者は「４００１年」を念頭にこのような結末を出したのでは？と思いたい。
まさに「ネバー・エンディング・ストーリー」である。

お話でした。
このシリーズは最初の2001年が一番訳がわからないというか、読み応えのあるものでしたが、2010年、2061年と続いていくうちにごく平凡なSFになってしまっています。
