ＳＦが好きでない人も、本の分厚さにためらう人も、本代がもったいない人も絶対にはまる作品です。作者の圧倒的な筆力に驚嘆。長大な抒情詩でありながら各人物が語る物語は傑作短編小説を凝縮したよう。蟻地獄のように引きずり込まれ、謎が解明されないまま続きは、次作へと、、。始めから下巻も頼まなければ後悔します。本当は「ハイペリオンの没落」も、ついでに頼んだほうが、、、。充実感まちがいなし。

　長大な4部作の劈頭を飾る秀作です。この作品の場合、ほどよい長さの連作中篇集といったおもむきですが、うまく書かれています。それにしてもいきなり雷鳴の中、宇宙船でラフマニノフを弾く領事、ですからね。この大風呂敷にはやられてしまいます。
　ただ謎を提示しただけで終わってしまうのでずるいといえばずるいのですが。その謎は「没落」でちょっと強引に解決されます。

最初、その分厚さ、4部構成（つまり全部で8冊！！）ということでしり込みしていましたが、このハイペリオン（上）のあたりだとはっきり言って話もつかみきれずにストレスがたまることもありますが、ハイペリオン（下）そして没落、エンディミオンまでつながるともう大変です！！！
当代指折りのスペースオペラによってください。長さなんて関係なくなります。そして幸せになりましょう（笑）
