とかく「難解」と片付けられやすい映画版を理解するためには必読の書。これを読めば、意外と映画版「2001年」はすんなり理解できる。初期の設定から如何に完成版が変容したかを探るのも面白い。

A.C.クラークとスタンリー・キューブリックが"2001年宇宙の旅"を作成するにあたっての共同作業のプロセスが細かく書かれていて読んでいると、こうやってあのシーンは思いついたんだ、ああこ~んな事だったのかとやたらに感銘を受けるエピソードがてんこ盛り。というより二人の意見がしばしば対立するところが面白い。例えば、キューブリックが、ETが地球に降り立って、人類にコマンドー戦術を教えて人類の繁栄をうながすとかどう？　とアイディアを持ち出してきたので、クラークがそりゃ使えんなと思った話とか。午前中いっぱい映画のアイディアを考えようとしても何も浮かんでこなかったとか。（笑）また、こうであったかもしれない映画の脚本（要は捨てた方で、映画には登場しなかった隠れた原稿）が圧倒的に面白い。

　クラークが脚本家として参加した「２００１年宇宙の旅」のシナリオ製作記である。
　もちろん映画も見たし、原作も読んだことがあるが、何となくあの作品は「偉大なＳＦ作家」であるクラークの力によって構想され、映像化のアイデアももたらされたに違いないと思っていた。猿人が知性を獲得する冒頭の印象的なシーンも、モノリスのアイデアも、宇宙船での数々の事件のエピソードも、後半の映像の氾濫部分も、ラストに至るシーンも、すべて、すべて「偉大なクラーク」の業績だと感じていた、と言うか信じていた。しかし本書を読んで分かったことは、監督キューブリックとの議論を交わしてアイデア練り上げたり、書き直しにつぐ書き直しでイマジネーションを絞られるクラークの姿だった。繰り返される推敲を経て、監督の思い通りのストーリーを生み出し、それが更に監督の所望した映像と合致した。これが「２００１年宇宙の旅」であったと言うことが分かった。映画作りの裏話と共に、産みの苦しみのプロセスが非常に興味深い。
　本書では差し戻しでお蔵入りになった「もうひとつの２００１年」と呼べる作品が収められている。最終稿と比べると興味深いが、それぞれの断片でも十分楽しめること請け合いである。
