ヴォネガットの作品としては、あんまりおもしろくないなと思いつつ、
読みすすめていたのですが、最後に号泣してしまいました。
なんていうか、全編皮肉たっぷり。
アホらしい誤解や、ばかばかしいファンタジーが積み重なって
ときどき“これってアリ？”と思いましたが、
そうか、ここまで辛辣で冷淡にしてきたのは、この涙にあるのかと、
笑わなければやっていられないほど、人生は辛い。
だからって、投げ出すのはもったないってことかと。
このカタルシス、ぜひ味わってください。

ヴォネガットの他の作品とのつながりも濃厚。
特に『チャンピオンたちの朝食』を読んだ方は、ぜひ。
キルゴア・トラウト関係のエピソードがまた出てます。

「たまたま孤島に辿り着いた10人そこそこを残して人類が死に絶えました。さて100万年過ぎたらどうなるでしょう」

進化をネタにしたフィクションです。
作中に直接出てくる訳ではないけど、ボトルネック効果や断続平衡といった進化論的概念を土台に置いて話が練られています。

が、恐ろしく身勝手で極端に気まぐれな人間模様が実は本書の大半。その語り口が進化論的な皮肉に満ち満ちていて実に愉快。巨大過ぎる脳にそそのかされて滑稽に振る舞うヒトを哀れみ慈しむ。笑うに笑えない、でも笑わずにはいられない。こんな酷くて痛々しくてそれ故笑えるユーモアは他に類を見ません。
完全に偶然に左右されたそれらのどうでもいい出来事が、後のヒトという種にとって無視出来ない影響を及ぼす。
ここに本書の一番強い主張が潜んでいる様に思えます。


ただ、確かに進化論的エッセンスを盛り込んだシナリオではありますが、この物語(歴史)そのものに充分な論理的説得力を見出すのはかなり困難です。
つまり本書を読んでもあんまし勉強にはならないかと。

――えーとそれはつまり、とりあえず笑っとけばOK??

　進化論って、こんなでいいの？（もちろん良い意味で）

　とても笑えます。軽薄に聞こえるかなぁ。でも、人が進化したってこんな問題やらあんな問題も。。などなどユーモアたっぷりに書かれているのです。あぁーー、そうだなぁ、真剣になって落ち込んでしまうよりはユーモアを心のどこかに置いておきたい。。人が死んでいくときの＊マークには要注意！！（読んだらわかります；笑）
