　本国では、とっくの昔に2冊も続編が出ている、「キンタグリオ・シリーズ」の第一作です。
　ああ・・・私に原語を円滑に読み解く能力さえあれば！　と、臍をかんでしまう、素晴らしい出来ばえです。
　センス・オブ・ワンダーの繰り出し方がもともと尋常でないソウヤーですから、SFというよりは異世界ものに近い本作でも、読後の深い満足感は同じです。
　これを読めば、「次の作品は？」となるのが人情。なのに、続編の邦訳は決まってもいないという、なんとも（良い意味での）（著者ではなく出版社へ対する）腹立たしさが残ることうけあい。

　私がロバートＪソウヤーと出会ったのは、『さよならダイノサウルス』が始めでした。恐竜の名前を題名に使っているところから、これまでのＳＦ小説には無い新しい冒険の臭いを嗅ぎ分け、早速に読み始めた所、みごとに予感的中！意外な発想と語り口の上手さに、一気に読まされてしまいました。それ以来、ソウヤーの作品は、値上がり間違い無しの優良株となったのです。 　『占星師アフサンの遠見鏡』…題名を聞くだけでどんな話しかと、ぞくぞくするのは、私だけでしょうか？

　主人公のアフサンは、宮廷に仕える見習占星師。宗教色の色濃く残る中世天文学の世界に観察と言う科学を持ち込んで世界の真の姿を伝える所などは、どこかの星の、誰かさんのお話と同じようではありますが、そこは、優良株のソウヤー、一人前のキンタグリオになる通過儀礼の恐竜狩りでの大スペクタクルあり、巡礼の旅では、船乗りシンドバットか白鯨のような冒険ありと、内容も盛り沢山に散りばめられ、楽しめる１冊に仕上がっています。勿論話は徐々にＳＦ色が濃くなって最後には素晴らしい未来がキンタグリオを待っているのです。遠見鏡は、星を観察するだけでなく未来をも見ることが出来るのです。

壮大な物語の序章だけ見せられて投げ捨てられた感じ。
続編の邦訳が未だに成されてないということは、それほど人気がなかったということなのかな。
実際に読んでみると、ファンタジィなのかSFなのか、そもそもそういった枠組みを超えた空想小説というほうがしっくりくるように思う、非常に大きなテーマと世界観を持った作品だけにもったいない。今更続編も出ないだろうから変な期待感だけ残るので評価は低め。でも原書が読める人なら続編を読むといいかもしれんね。
