この小説は、あの映画「2001年宇宙の旅」の続編でもあり、小説「2001年宇宙の旅」の続編でもある。
そのあたりの事情は、著者自身による説明に詳しいが、クラークがより木星に興味を持ったことにも理由がありそうだ。
ソビエト（若い方、知ってますか？）の宇宙船に同乗したフロイド博士が、木星圏で見たものはなんだったのか？
あの哀れなHALはどうなったのか？

この小説の中で、クラークは、木星より、そして宇宙より、哀れなほど卑小な人類を描く。
だが、遠い目標としてのモノリス・メーカーが、決して到達不可能な目標ではないことも描いているのである。

10年前の事故の調査の為にフロイド博士がロシア人のお友達と宇宙に向けて出発です!!
内容は小説版2001年宇宙の旅の続編というより、映画版の続編なので、最初は土星と木星が
違うだけですごい違和感なんですが（普通によくよく考えれば当たり前、、）、まぁ読んでる
内にそんな細かいことは（全然細かくない、、）気にならなくなってきます。そこらへんは
さすがクラークで、キューブリックが残した謎の解明をよくやってくれてます。いや本当に
凄い事だ。。

もはや何かを超越して（これは説明しようないけど、、）精神的な存在となったデイビット・
ボーマンの視点で描写したり、ハルの復活など見所はつきませんよ。今回はロシア人のお友達
と旅をするので、その辺のやり取り心理描写的な所も面白いです。実際ハルの生みの親、
チャンドラなんかは実に魅力的なキャラでいい。
中国の船も出てきますが、そこらへんの描写はまさに現代社会を予測してたようで実に愉快
なんですよ（笑）。

ラストはあまりにビックリ仰天で、天体を変えちゃうの？って発想が凄いんです。
こっちも前作には及ばないものの中々読み応えは十分ですよ!

「２００１」も原作本と映画では、表現方法の違いにより、原作の重要な場面が軽く扱われていたり、割愛されている事が、原作を読む事で、「なるほど、そういう事だったのか！」と理解できる本です。映画「２０１０」では、割愛されていた中国の宇宙船が衛星エウロパに着陸し、エウロパは氷の衛星であり、中国の宇宙船は、氷の下の生命体に破壊されてしまう場面が描かれている。作者クラークはヴォイジャーの撮影した写真により、エウロパは氷の衛星である事を知り、この星を重要な鍵として位置付けている。木星の太陽化計画が「宇宙的存在」の操るモノリスにより実行される。その時、「エウロパには近づくな」というメッセージが届き、木星が太陽になったお陰で、エウロパの氷は溶け、本格的に生物の進化が始まる。映画では、最後のシーンでエウロパにそそり立つモノリスを映し出しているが、メッセージの意味と最後のシーンの意味は、映画だけでは判らない人が殆どだと思う。エピローグは２００１０年！のエウロパの状況が数行描かれている事を付け加えておきます。まさか、クラーク自身、さらに続編となる「２０６１年」「３００１年」を書く事になるとは、思っていなかったのでは？続編も面白いので、これを読み終わったら続編を手になさる事をお勧めします。
