作者の強烈なプロフィールを知ってしまった後に読んだので、最初のうちはそれほど大したことないかと思っていましたが「接続された女」「男たちの知らない女」あたりでのめり込み、「愛はさだめ、さだめは死」「最後の午後に」でノックアウトです。人間とは違う生物の本能を心情として読者に体験させるという極めて実験的な技巧と、アクション大作映画のクライマックスを見るような「最後の午後に」の後半部分。どうして同じ人がこれを書けるのかが不思議です。翻訳者の方にも感謝です。

サイバーフェミニズムの先駆者と言われるJames Tipree,Jr.の代表作を集めたアンソロジーで内容は｢すべての種類のイエス｣｢楽園の乳｣｢そしてわたしは失われた道をたどり、その場所を見いだした｣｢エイン博士の最後の飛行｣｢アンバージャック｣｢乙女に映しておぼろげに｣｢接続された女｣｢恐竜の鼻は夜ひらく｣｢男たちの知らない女｣｢断層｣｢愛はさだめ、さだめは死｣｢最後の午後に｣の12編です。伊藤典夫らによる翻訳は全体としてはそれほど悪くないのですが、オリジナル原語版だと心地よいリズム感を持っている台詞の部分が日本語に変換されてしまうとかなりぎこちなくなっているので(例えば｢男たちの知らない女｣に登場する有名な台詞も｢あ、トラウマなんかないのよ。男が嫌いなわけでもないわ。そんなのはまるでーまるで、天気を嫌うようなものじゃない｣と訳されてしまうと或る種の臭さが漂っていることは否定できないと思うのです)、その辺りがこの邦訳版に対する評価の分かれ目になるかと思います。

「ＳＦ短篇＝ワン・アイデア・ストーリー」という定式を覆し、ＳＦ短篇の新たな、そして多様な可能性を切り開いた女流作家。それがジェイムズ・ティプトリー・ジュニアである。その功績は４０年代のブラウン、ブラッドベリや５０年代のシェクリイに勝るとも劣らない。ティプトリーの作品は常に斬新で、驚きに満ちている。センス・オブ・ワンダーという点から考えれば、異色作家ティプトリーは最も正統的な短篇ＳＦ作家といえる。
　ヴァラエティに富んだ１２の短篇を収録したティプトリーの第２短編集。
