バラード自身が『私の住んでみたい未来』と語るヴァーミリオン・サンズ。静謐と情熱と退廃の支配する想像上のリゾートは、２１世紀を迎えた今、私たちの前でさらに輝きを増している。凡百の作家たちでは到底描き得なかった、人間の生み出したテクノロジーと芸術の融合した限りなく美しい未来世界。文句なく、バラードの、いや、２０世紀文学の最高到達点の一つである。

Ｊ・Ｇ・バラードの同名のリゾート地を舞台とした作品を集めた短篇集である。
短編の多くは、なんらかの芸術を題材としたＳＦで、
雲を彫刻する「コーラルＤの雲の彫刻師」と、
歌う草花を育てて売っている「プリマペラドンナ」の二つはまあまあ面白い。
芸術ＳＦというコンセプトは面白いが、この本でそれが成功しているとは思わない。
全体としては、地味で単調であり、それほどおすすめはしない。
バラードの短編の代表作はあくまでも短編集「時の声」に収録された作品たちだと思うので、そちらを読んで欲しい。
